@PazJohnMitch Go for the third one, if you can. It has a nice ship sailing side feature.

    @santashi

I gave my DS to my Mum when she broke her second one. So I only have the 3DS now. I thought EO3 was import only and the 3DS was region locked?

@PazJohnMitch it's import only but as a non-sneaky DS game (unlike Pokemon) it is not region locked. Plays fine on my 3DS. Try VGP and see if they have it in stock.

Yeah, a US copy of EOIII works fine on an EU 3DS, I was playing it on mine this morning.

The trouble is finding it for a decent price, but there are several used copies for a reasonable fee on amazon.com.

EOIII is the best one to start with, I reckon, it's far more forgiving than the first two, the sailing is a great relief to the dungeon-crawling that you'll keep going back to (it gains you money, side-quests and items in addition to being a dungeon in it's own right).

I also find EOIII more replayable due to the subclasses, slightly more off-the-wall classes (your healing is now a combination of the monk class, a front-line combatant, and the prince/princess, who heals via their buffs/passive skills) and almost infinite party setups.

In the first 2 games, by the time you had the almost-obligatory Defender, Medic and Mage, it didn't leave much room for choice.

I'm actually sorely tempted to pre-order it anyway, and then wait 6 months or so to see if it will get an EU release announcement before ordering a US 3DS. At least that way I'd defo get to play it eventually without suffering the buyers remorse of a localisation announcement the next day!

Atlus Have just announced a limited reprint of the first 3 games, with a bonus for ordering the set, so if anyone was looking to get into the series but has been put off by high prices, noes your chance- US DS games work fine in an EU 3DS.

Anyone got any more solid info on this? I see they're doing pre-order stuff in the US:

Love to know if an EU release is at all likely.

If it helps, it seemed to be one of the most requested games in the 'what would you most like to see us localise?' poll Ghostlight did recently.

Ahh, Bisto. Did they give a timeframe at all? Not that it matters that much as long as it's coming. I'm thrilled that we're definitely getting it.

This Spring, apparently, so I'd guess April or May.

Fantastic news, being able to play all 4 games on one console is awesome.

I should learn never to trade my handhelds in; I *always* end up regretting it.

I know a lot of you are looking forward to this game. I don't want to put a damper on your enthusiasm.

It makes excellent use of the 3D on the 3DS. It makes great improvements in many areas to the formula. It is just as fundamentally well made a dungeon hack as the other 3 games. It may have the most gorgeous and inspired soundtrack of the series.

However, for the first time in the series, I started to feel like "Oh this again" while playing it. It IS a series that stakes it livelihood on selling an old school experience in a modern reworking. That said, it is starting to get too influenced by modern design to deliver this, I think. It is taking too many ideas from post-SFC RPGs and this is diluting the prime appeal of the game. I really think for the next time, they need to think how they can improve the old-school dungeon hack part of the game, because there's still so much than can be done with that. Remember when this series was thought of as innovative because it used the touch screen to let you draw your own maps? That type of idea needs to find its way into Etrain Odyssey V for the series to remain fresh.

So its great, but I just think its starting to get old -- not because I'm looking for something the games aren't interesting in giving, rather because I think they're a little lost on how to improve the core of the game. So that's my 2 cents.

Hmm. What about the balloning bits? Do they offer anything fresh, or is it a straight re-skin of the ship sections in III?

It's an improvement to the ship sections, and is more imaginative than the ship in III, better integrated into the main gameplay, but just as out of place with what they've been trying to do with the series.

I keep saying it would have been way, way cooler if you had to save up to buy a really expensive ship/airship to travel to different islands/floating islands and upgrade it, saving up tons of money to get to new areas. It makes a great, great reward for people who actually like to grind to level 99 and such, which is part of Etrian Odyssey's demographic. Then, make it increasingly likely that your ship will crash or sink every time you take it out, no matter what. Once it does crash, you can "trade" sunken ships with other players via SpotPass and explore the wrecks of sunken ships and airships. The higher the level the crash the more dangerous the wreck is to explore, but the better the loot. Once you've explored and mapped a wrecked ship, you can sell your map in an store online with other players and make money if they buy your maps. This would feed back into the kind of infinite replayability that makes Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter sell while being a better match for a dungeon hack.

As it is, it still feels like it belongs in a more modern RPG design and not in Etrian Odyssey.

    Ok.

You're right about the replayability. Having finished the main game in III and mapped out the seas, I stopped playing and haven't touched it since. That's partly because I'm not very good at it, but mostly because there's not much in the way of motivation to continue, other than ticking another box on those lists. Something other than grinding would give it longevity, for me.

I was pretty much expecting more of the same from EOIV so I think I'll still be very happy with it. :) Hopefully I should be done with Demon Gaze by the time it's released here!

Enjoyed my quick dabble with US version, although was pretty horrified at the lack of a manual... Then heard other games like Fire emblem are similar. Did the Japanese versions cost-cut like this too or just the U.S. so far?

Oh excellent. JTN's probably right about the series getting a little bit familiar, but it's been a good two years since the last one. The map making doesn't get boring.
