Yeah, he's had all of my spirit dust upgrades, his magic power is phenomenal, and he can use all the best tomes as well as healing staves (as a sage), he's gone from being a rookie to being a lynchpin of my main team!

I'm still struggling to get Donnel the xp he needs, maybe I should try the DLC maps...

He's (Ricken) always been one of my weaker characters, unfortunately. Bad luck in the level ups - there have been at least a few times where he's gotten only a single stat increase.

Even using that DLC map Donnel is a struggle at first. It's tricky to leave a baddie with just a couple of HP so that Donnel can finish them off!

I managed to get Donnel up there without using the grinding map. He is very much worth it in the end.

Also, like I said, craft him a good spear. That will help a lot.

Forging is something that has passed me by slightly...
    Can you summarise?

Go to any shop, choose the forge option, and choose any of your weapons - say, a new bronze lance. Then, basically, you can add stats to it for money. You can make it better than an iron lance, which is very handy for Donnel.

Yes. But for weak characters you will probably want to max the weapon power.

My Donnel is single-handedly taking down maps now. He can sit there with the best weapons and Armsthrift, evading almost anything, doing heaps of crits and pretty much wrecking. So hard not to use him for easy wins, everyone else is getting underlevelled.

Ricken was my mage of choice early game, but Tharja came along, they got married, and now he's a househusband while she's out taking care of business.

Definitely marrying Tharja off to the MU on my next game... they have some creepy dialogue.

Ricken and Donnel are pretty bad ass later on eh?

only two characters to have died except when I cheated in mine

    :(

Technically Ricken just died in the battle I've bookmarked, so I *could* go back to the main save and prevent his death, but I've done that too many times and I need to stick to the deaths

How are most people playing this? With resets or letting characters die. This is my first proper Fire Emblem so am unsure what the best thing to do is. I did start off letting characters die but was slightly put off when I managed to lose 4 in the space of a few battles.

    That's not a question!

I've been using this website to learn to play/character planning:

This. Its how I've played every FE game so far and will continue to do so. I just can't let the little buggers go... Even the really shit characters.

I had a feeling that was the case. I might let the occasional character die for dramatic effect.

If the developers wanted you to live with letting characters die, then they wouldn't let you restart in the first place. But they do give you that option, because this isn't a roguelike.

It's not "cheating" - no game mechanics are being abused or taken advantage of. If I lived with every character death on Lunatic, I'd have no bloody army left after a few chapters.

They've got the no-permadeath mode and in-battle saves. They know that restarting is a reality of Fire Emblem.

argh got my XCOM sitting there staring me down for after finishing FE.

If you reset because your character didn't crit or whatever, then that would be cheating. But you can't do that anyway, because the rng is determined before you even make your move.

    I just crafted a super-lance for Donnel - makes a big difference.
So I also crafted a nice one for Sumia too. :)

    Thanks for the tip.

I've usually got it back to the home menu and killed even before the death animation has played out.

Must admit, it's hard levelling up characters you've left for later when all the enemies are levelled up too. Got my Donnel to 5, but he's still weak (will fashion him a neat weapon next time I get some bullion, cheers) and I've only just got Mirivel to level 2.

Only on battle 8 at the moment though. It's not my only playthrough (I started a normal mode one when I got pissed off with my hard run early on, but went back to it fairly quickly), and I have been spending quite a lot of time grinding (and resetting when I fuck up with Mirivel).

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

The only characters I let die in FE are usually the really annoying child ones- the second healer you get annoyed me so much I sent her off to get stabbed in the face 3 missions after I met her. 'Teach' may also find himself being sent off on a long, lonely walk up the middle very soon, along with the dragon and bunny girls.

To be fair, I think most of the cast is great- Chrom is a nicely balanced leader, capable and brave like most FE commanders, and Frederick just cracks me up- it's a shame he's being outclassed by Stahl and Sully now. Their daughter is also a monster- she has 'indoor fighter' and 'outdoor fighter'- she just excels at combat everywhere!

The second healer? You mean Maribelle? You're gonna miss out on her learning some very amusing slang!

Maribelle's far less annoying than Lissa!

I was referring to Miriel, by the way, rather than Mirivel.
