    Your Novation keyboard is indeed a USB MIDI device, as in 'it sends MIDI data via USB'. Any audio USB interface such as M-Audio, Roland, Presonus, etc. to name a few will complement that nicely.

    Here are some tracks I produced for a female singer: http://soundcloud.com/songs-of-maryjane
    So am I getting the wrong end of some kind of stick on this? As in, to defeat the terror of latency (as I'm currently using the onboard soundcard) I don't need an external soundcard that I plug my keyboard into, rather all I need is an external soundcard in one of my laptop's USB ports, my keyboard in another of my laptop's USB ports and the soundcard will be latency free? Will the midi input of the keyboard through my laptop's USB connection be instant, like an ASIO sound card, so that I don't get lag when I hit a key on the keyboard?

    Considering I've been making music for years, you'd think I'd be a bit less clueless about all this...
    No system can be totally latency free, but yeah, you got it. MIDI transmission via USB is quasi-instant, the latency is the time it takes for the computer to generate a sound - I'm assuming you're using virtual instruments - and for the audio interface to convert from digital to analog, i.e. for you to be able to hear it. You won't notice any gap with any latency below 15ms unless you're an accomplished keyobard player, and modern day interfaces will give you latencies as low as 5ms without it or your computer breaking a sweat.

    So get an audio interface and you're pretty much sorted.

    Excellent! You've earned yourself a cat image.

    Thanks!

    As far as your audio interface goes - I just received one of these in the post, and they're EXCELLENT. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0041OSWUG/ref=ox_ya_os_product
    Nice easy setup, clean high-quality sound, and powered by your USB port. Lovely stuff!

    @buggrit

    I came across that in PC World at the weekend and was just about to look up a link to find out if they're any good.

    Thanks for the mini-review. I suppose the software looks quite basic, but it's also much much less expensive than other software, so I suppose you get what you pay for.

    Also, I wouldn't want to break the bank until I know what I'm doing with that sort of thing.

    The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

    Pro Tools LE is likely to be all you need for a good while for recording software, is decently powerful for something that's basically free :) When you're ready to move up a level, Reaper is easily as good as the big names and costs buttons.

    Cool - how's the latency? I'm guess it's ASIO and all that business?

    Cheers for all this help, peeps - warm fuzzy feelings all round :)

    EDIT - plumped for this - seems like a very decent price for the hardware...

    @binster So, first impressions?

    Very tempted to pick this up within the next few weeks.

    @Rusty_M still awaiting delivery. When it arrives I'll put my thoughts up.

    I'm expecting it'll be something along the lines of 'does what it says on the tin' though :) I don't really do much with external inputs (like guitars or vocals) so it's possibly a bit overkill for my needs...

    Might pick one up tomorrow. They're pretty cheap at PC world, or at least something very similar is.

    I'll need another cable for my mic though.

    So I got the Avid Recording Studio, and had a wee play with it today. It seems decent. I already dislike the software that comes bundled with it. It forces you to install on your system drive. Also, it only outputs through the little box thing, not the PC speakers/headphones.

    However, the little box works really quite well with Audacity, so I'm happy with my purchase. Audio quality seems pretty good, so I'm satisfied.

    I've a question about guitar humbuckers. I have an Ibanez S770FM-ATF which has two humbuckers and a single coil in the middle. I want to stick a set of Seymour Duncan pups (JB/Jazz set) on either side and a JBJ (mini humbucker) in the middle.
    The Ibanez has a 5 way switch, what will 2 and 4 use? Both middle and neck/bridge of half of each?

    Received my M-Audio Fast Track Pro doobry, plugged it in and all is working. Quick response times, sounds nice, not done anything with audio inputs or anything, but it's doing what I need it to so far. Whee!

    Yeah, Pro-Tools SE is a bit gash - OK for quick sketches but a bit of a ball ache to use.
    As far as the audio goes - that's because you're handing control of all your sound to the Fast Track. On a Mac you can create an aggregate audio device to route your audio in all kinds of odd ways, maybe ASIO4All will do the same on PC, I don't really know. The Fast Track probably sounds better than your PC's audio anyway, so use the phono outs from that for your speakers :)

    By default, likely to be the inside coil of the outer pickup and the middle single coil on either of those positions. You can get funky with the wiring if you'd like to change it (or ask your guitar repair guy to do it for you!) :)

    Thanks for the reply, that's the default right now but what will it be when I install the JBJ (jeff beck junior)? It won't be a single coil in the middle then

    Quick heads up on the Fast Track Pro - I found that the sound output dropped out completely from time to time - the device was still powered, the outputs from Ableton showed sound but no sound from the unit.

    I restarted and it worked again, but it seems to be a known problem -

    So yeah... if it keeps happening I guess I'll return it. Everyone else, purchase with care...

    Nicely done. I tried that once, but I can never get the loops quite right. My feet can't hit the buttons in time well enough.

    Hey, yeah I've been writing songs for about ten years. I have some dodgy four track recordings:

    I use a Micro BR which is about my level of technical ability.

    I'm quite a way off finishing my album tbh...it's very hard to get everything done alone. My singer person arrives from the States mid September so we should get plenty of work done around then.

    @Cupidstunt73

    Not been compared to Opeth before but I'll certainly take that! :D

    Thanks for listening and commenting. I really appreciate it.
