Don't get me wrong, Kickstarter is in itself a great thing, but it's pretty high up the rung of creativity, a rung that the huge majority of creators won't ever reach.
It worked for Elton Leung with his x-stylus project, although his initial kickstarter project failed because not everyone paid up, but the publicity from that allowed him to move to another crowd sourcing site and do it there. That's one of the downsides to kickstarter - you don't pay up when you pledge. The other site he used, indiegogo did, but you didn't get your money back if the project didn't reach its target. What a service like kickstarter really needs is third party escrow from someone trusted.

Great news, I was a little sad at the Psychonauts 2 news as I prefered the old style Day of the Tenticle style games, now the best of both worlds. I really hopes it works out for them.

To be fair, practical things that you can already demonstrate with a proof-of-concept are different to creative entertainment projects, which is what I was mostly talking about.

    Kickstarter takes 5%

Good article by John Walker in Rock, Paper, Shotgun

"It’s unlikely that Infinity Ward will be raising $100m to create a new Modern Warfare through donations from their audience. But it does, I believe, raise questions publishers need to be asking themselves. Questions like: Are we really in touch with our audience’s desires?"

I have no idea why I've not thrown some money at this despite following it throughout the day, on and off.

    Time to pay I think.

Great article, some very good observations in there.

" It raises a really important point about people’s willingness to part with money, in an industry so convinced everyone wants to “steal”."

    - quite so!

Come on $1 million in the first 24 hours! That would make proper headline news worldwide!

The appeal started at 2AM UK time, so I think it will hit the million before then.
