    There's a mini drive on.

People have been doing the maths to work out how high the figure needs to be for the game to have a $3million budget, after Amazon and Kickstarter have taken their cut.

The magic number is $3.3m I believe.

It looks like it's about to reach $3.2 million, eight times the original target...

Actually it seems to be a stream to just ease the traffic on the kickstarter website. Visitors that just want to get a look at the current total can go to the stream, this might be to make sure new contributors are not left out.

There were people nattering and kicking virtual baloons about earlier - I think the tally won't be all there is to see in the 2 hours.

Not really. Halos advertising budget alone was nearly 100 times that. (Depending on estimates, but it was around 200 to 300 million dollars.)

Still awesome news though. I love double fine and am tired of replaying Broken Sword and monkey Island over and over again.

Halo's advertising budget alone was not $300m. It was around $6m for each.

3.3 million wouldn't even cover the reviewer bribes on the average Halo game

I imagine the advertising budget for each Halo instalment matches its development budget pretty closely, which for Halo 3 was about $55 million I believe. COD and BF3 probably had twice that though.

COD has adverts in shops the day after it's announced.

I thought Halo's advertising budget was 300 billion, not 300 million.

Or maybe it was 300 trillion, I'm not sure.

Duh! Where did I get that number from?

Was around 40 million according to wiki.
  • Deleted user 14 March 2012 19:36:11
That figure looks misleading as there was direct income from some of the marketing things, like action figures, that offset it.

The figure quoted is also unreferenced in wikipedia.

    @ryandsimmons

What I meant by kicking the game industry in the ass was not about the amount of money they raised but the fact they raised a nice amount of money to do make the type of project that they want to do and market it how they want to without the constraints of dealing with a publisher and thus kicking the industry's ass.

    Think David beating Goliath.

I've already spent more on this project than I have on the entirety of the Halo series (I bought the first game when it was cheap and didn't get on with it). Somehow I think the marketing drive it's already had for free is worth some millions.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

It's how americans and other people who can't speak English pronounce it.

Which is a bit ironic, given it's a French word.
