I've decided to set aside more time for gaming, so I've got myself an Xbox360 and am planning on playing through the best of its back catalogue. I'm not so bothered about generic franchises, or Xbox versions of PC games, but I'm more into interesting, original, niche type, cult classics...

I'm starting with the early years, around 2005-07. So I've played Crackdown (awesome), Rockstar Table Tennis (hardcore ping pong!) and now on Dead Rising (loving it). Can anyone suggest what I should go with next? Is Kameo worth a try? Viva Pinata? Halo 3 (offline...)? Burnout Revenge?

    Thanks for looking! Any pointers?

    Here's the evolving list:

    : Pre-2005:
    Rez HD
    MGS Collection HD
    Halo: Combat Evolved HD

    :2005:
    Condemned
    Perfect Dark Zero

    :2006:
    Dead Rising
    Viva Pinata
    Rockstar TT
    Gears of War

    :2007:
    Crackdown
    Earth Defense Force 2017 ?

    :2008:
    Too Human
    Gears of War II
    Mirror's Edge ?
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts ?

    :2009:
    Shadow Complex

    :2010:
    Darksiders
    Split/Second
    Alan Wake
    Vanquish
    Bayonetta
    Halo Reach
    Red Dead Redemption
    Nier?
    Alpha Protocol?
    Deadly Premonition?

    :2011:
    Child of Eden
    Dark Souls
    Gears of War III

    :2012:
    Trials Evolution

Updated - I'm aiming more for Xbox exclusives, or games better on Xbox than PC.

Kameo's ok. Viva Pinata is great, and go for Halo Reach - it's just better in every way. PGR and Forza for racers, and Split/Second is better than Burnout. Alan Wake. Vanquish and Bayonetta if you haven't already. Maybe some Fable.

God knows what order by release though.

If you're after an arcade racer I'd go for split second rather than burnout. Should be able to pick it up nice and cheap these days.

Other than that, I'd put bioshock, arkham asylum and any one of the older assassin's creeds at the top of the list.

Darksiders too, if you like the action rpg-lite style.

    Also, stock up on XBL poInts and treat yourself to;

    Trials HD
    Shadow Complex
    Limbo
    Bastion
    From Dust

Alan Wake as has already been mentioned is a great choice. So much cheap gaming in store for the latecomers.

    Bayonetta definitely.
Stranglehold gets frustrating but the joy of the first couple of levels are well worth the few quid it should cost.
Virtua Fighter 5 should be dirt cheap and is very good, likewise Street Fighter IV if you haven't played it yet.
Pure is an excellent game by the makers of Split Second, totally different style so I would wholeheartedly recommend it as well.

    Lost Odyssey
    Fallout
    Oblivion

All cheap, all great and should keep you busy until Christmas.

Viva Piñata is well worth the few quid you can get it for now. Alan Wake and Condemned are both niche exclusives and cheap, they're also fantastic games.Which helps.

Cheers guys, exactly the kind of things I was looking for. Seems like 2010 was a very good year... My planned library is starting to look like this:

    :pre-2005:
    MGS HD Collection
    Halo: Combat Evolved HD
Beyond Good and Evil HD (played the original)

    :2005:
    Condemned

    :2006:
    Dead Rising
    Viva Pinata?

    :2007:
    Crackdown
    Rockstar TT

    :2008:
Lost Odyssey? (will this eat my life?)

    :2009:
    Shadow Complex

    :2010:
    Darksiders
    Split/Second
    Alan Wake
    Vanquish
    Bayonetta
    Halo Reach
    Red Dead Redemption?

    :2011:
    ?

For the £4 you can get it for now it's a steal. Marmite game but worth the cash. A flawed masterpiece.

    @rainsong

    Pre 2005: Perfect Dark HD
    2011: Bastion and From Dust.

Sack off lost odyssey, your backlog is too big for that.

Trials HD is the best £10 you will ever spend!

Cool. I've put the list into the first post.

From Dust, Bastion, Batman, Mass Effect, Fallout, Limbo - I got cheap on Steam.

I'm shocked and appalled that Earth Defense Force 2017 hasn't been mentioned yet.

    This space left intentionally blank.

Heh, thinking back. I remember thinking The Outfit was going to be great. It wasn't.

This is my list of Xbox 360 must-plays from start to current:

    Hitman: Blood Money

Get the on-rails (hand-holding) tutorial level out of the way and the fun starts. Quality award winning soundtrack.
Freedom to solve missions in multiple, original ways Personal Highlights: Curtains Down mission in the Opera House and getting Agent 47 up dancing
Note: Avoid the Hitman film at all costs.

    Condemned: Criminal Origins (2005)

Really good first-person psychological action horror.
Very strong on satisfying melee combat, using objects in the environment to survive/fight with + some detective puzzle solving, and collecting dead birds (?) Some great scares.
Watch out for the mannequins in Bart's Department Store Note: Avoid the sequel: Condemned 2: Bloodshot

    Saints Row

Where Saints all began. Volition stepped in to fill the void of silly, fun, tongue-in-cheek open world games after Rockstar departed to work on more serious versions.

    PGR 3

Arcade/sim racing at it's finist from Bizarre Creations.
Pick up PGR 4 for the motorbikes too.

    Rez HD

    Pure Synesthesia.

    Dead Space

    Event Horizon: the game.

    BioShock

What has gone on down here?

    Red Dead Redemption

    Open world action-adventure western.

    DR2: CASE ZERO + Dead Rising 2

If you're playing Dead Rising and loving it, you'll love these.

    Hitman
Too Human (srsly, it'll be <£3)
    Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts
    Lost Odyssey
    Battlestations: Pacific
    Viva Pinata
    Crackdown
Halo ODST (and Reach) - ODST is a quite delicious FPS, very nice tone.

^ some damn fine exclusives there, even if some (TH) are a bit janky/love/hate.

    Let alone XBLA

and Gears 1/2/3. 3 is the best, but 1 will be dirt cheap. Some hate them, deride and spit at them. For my money, they're three of the best 3rd person shooters I've ever played.

And yes, they can be colourful, 3 especially.
  • Deleted user 26 January 2012 00:33:56
Gears 1 is still the best out of the three for me.

    Gears 3

Whatever you do, don't let Vice.Destroyer post here and talk you into playing Blue Dragon...!

Just make sure you play the 2009 games on your list and all's good :)

Yeah, Lost Odyssey > Blue Dragon

But Resonance of Fate > LO.

Not sure about Tales of Vesperia.

Gave up half way through both RoF and ToV. Bugger, I'd totally forgotten about them and now you've made me want to play RoF again Red :(

Singularity, The Darkness, Metro 2033 for a cheap shooter fix. The latter 2 have sequels coming out.

I completed RoF in about 5 chunks, over around 2 years! Took me a while, but was worth it.
