A trailer for Dear Esther, the Half Life 2 mod that is now a full game, coming to Steam on 14th Febuary.

Edit: Apparently it's already got 8/10 from Edge magazine.

Looks interesting from the footage. Must admit, before I opened the thread I was fully expecting the return of That's Life!

Last June, Dan Pinchbeck was saying that he wants it to go for "less than $10" using his smokes + cinema ticket +round of drinks pricing formula. (beefjack.com/news/dear-esther-blowout/)

Quite where he gets those for a tenner I don't know. Maybe was having a bit of a When I Were A Lad moment.

Does look lovely and I like the premise. Played a bit of the original and it was intriguing. Edge giving it an 8 doesn't surprise me as it's the sort of thing I can see them enjoying.

Yeah, I've played the original mod. It's quite an experience, but there's not actually any game to it. It's a matter of walking from A to B while experiencing the tale the narrator is telling, and seeing other clues to the story in the scenery.

Some sexy work with the Source engine - would be great to see what they could do with the improvements they've made for a more game-y game.

Cheers. Tbh I'd probably buy it whatever the price (within reason of course) but I was just curious.

It'll be interesting to see how well it does.

    It's not quite a game then ?
I wonder why this was nominated as a IGF finalist then.., IGF for a couple of years reminds me of the film festivals in Canne's :)

It's like Amnesia in as much as story and atmosphere are important and things might not be exactly as they appear. The original's a Half-Life 2 mod so you can download it at your leisure.

My understanding from reading a lot of stuff is that it isn't so much a game, as an on-rails story with little actual interaction. Gorgeous environments and nice atmosphere and story, but little actual "game".

I've seen it compared to that one that was set in a graveyard, and the red riding hood one. It's part of the "games as art" subgenre.

EDIT: Also it only lasts about 2 hours.

Still going to get it though.

I've played both of those. They were both pretty, but neither were close enough to games to be worthy of the name. If this is anything like them, I won't be touching it.

I like art. I like games. Putting the art before the game element just spoils both for me.

I see these kind of mods/games as more interactive storys, than art. (depends on definition of art blah blah/can of worms etc)

I wouldn't mind seeing a few more HL2 mods fleshed out like Dear Esther has. The Stanley Parable could be really good, with visuals as mental as it's narration.

Will get this as I do like the premise and visual style. Might be a bit slow and pretentious for some but after Skyrim and Dead Space 2 something a little more chilled out sounds good to me. Edit - Actually, Skryim was pretty chilled at times.

I think stuff like this, The Path, the Graveyard., Trauma and the like are fantastic to see, glad the project has finally come around to release day as I put off playing the mod.

I've only seen a few screenshots so excuse the lazy question, what type of game is it? I can't tell.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

It's not really a game, more a story you wander through.

    I want an XBLA version.

As for the Path I enjoyed that a lot, again it wasn't really a game, but the different encounters where quite interesting.

It's still not available to purchase? I expect this kind of bizarre steam release scenario for EA/THQ/etc games but not for this.

It's a source mod, so unless Valve buys it, you'll never see it on another platform.

It's been on there for a while but without the option to (pre-)purchase.

Edit: ah I see it's available at 6pm.

First impressions - just spent 30 minutes wandering around sme coastal paths At either dusk or dawn, got stuck on a rock. Someone narrated a bunch of seemingly unrelated and wordy text. Had to quit to solve rock issue. Went to a cave the second time that I'd been in the first time. First time there was a discarded suit in the cave. Second time there wasnae.
