Count yourselves lucky. I was talking to my brother yesterday, complaining about this very thing. He lives in Uganda and he gets 1mb dl. 0.25 upload.

I get 2 Mb/s where I live, but seeing as it's out in the middle of nowhere it costs about 20 quid/month and I only get 40 GB download allowance.
Mine costs the same but i rarely get over 1.7Mb, although i have no limit to what i can use. Unfortunately i am in the middle of no-where. My ISP tells me the line is shite (i know this) and i should bug BT to fix it but BT refuse to accept there is any problem and i`m stuck with it......

It's your ISP's duty to sort out any issues with BT. Take it through the dispute resolution scheme if you're unhappy....

Pfft! If you think it feels bad having 3 Meg out in the sticks, imagine only having 3 Meg in the sodding capital, SURROUNDED by other wankers on 10-50. :(

Sadly no company seems to have formulated any kind of plan for bringing fibre optic broadband to blocks of flats, hence excluding 90+% of people who live in London. Apparently this isn't a problem though.

There are a few, but tend to be new build only. Much of the problems are access rights, with lots of different landlords, making it costly and time consuming. There are proposals to look at this but will be a while before you see any impact

It'll be "up to." What you get depends on how far from the exchange you are,.and I guess he's about 2-3km away. If not more

Indeed. Auction for the spectrum is the end of this year, services next year at some point, if you're lucky

Yeah, we had that with Sky, but then got a boost when we switched to Be.

1 Mb between 3 nerds in a flat == pain.

We get about 5MB here, which is OK. Particularly as they were unable to get our DSL working at all in our last house, and the only Internet we had for a year came via a '3' dongle which could only pick up a 3G signal in one room of the house.

Having said that, mobile and 3G signals are absolutely rubbish throughout our area, and I strongly suspect we won't get 4G coverage when it rolls out. So we're likely to get left behind.

Pretty sure I read Hyperoptic were trying to do this, but they don't publish their roll-out plans :(

I am envious of that Derbs, but less envious than I was as I've recently changed internet providers.

I get up to 3 Mb/s download and 0.5 Mb/s upload, used to be 2 Mb/s down and an insignificant amount up. A 50% improvement and a more stable connection is definitely noticeable.

BT have rolled out fibre optic in my area now, big increase in price though and i'm wondering if I should upgrade considering its only me that uses it and I can game lag free, stream most content etc.

When I was out for uni we had Virgin cable (can't remember the speed, maybe 12mb?) shared between 5 in the main house and 3 in the annexe it was so unusable I ended up getting my own mobile broadband dongle.

    @Fake_Blood

So my Belgacom contract is ending. How does it work if I want to swap - with as little interruption as possible? Do I need to inform the new company and they take care of it? I think I'll change to Numericable..

I get 2.0 max from my exchange. It's old and knackered and unlikely to get updated :-(

I feel your pain Murbal. I wish BT would spread the costs of their spending so that exchanges that havent been upgraded properly in years get a chance of a nice connection.
