This generation just passed me by, and I haven't got a 360 or a PS3. However, with talk of 'next-gen' consoles, my inner collector is twitching, and I realise I want to get one of each 'for the sake of completeness'.

One advantage of arriving late to the party is that there are a shedload of games for each, and you can just cherry pick the good stuff. So what does the panel recommend as 'must haves' for each?

    Bearing in mind:

I suck at FPS' and so tend to avoid them (although I'd probably make an exception for Halo).
Love adventure gaming (KOTOR and the like).
Like driving games - GT5 would be a must.
For me, Single player > multiplayer.

Get Mirrors Edge for about 3 nowadays. Just been replaying it myself, amazing game and a real breath of fresh air. First person parkour game with a great time trials element.

Also get Just Cause 2 as it's great fun and a real great looking game world to explore then explode.

Burnout Paradise Ultimate Box will satisfy your arcade racing needs.

Mass Effect one and two are essential if you like RPG / Adventure games especially as you referenced KOTOR. Two great story driven action-rpgs

Crazy thing is youve timed it brilliantly - you should be able to get the above five games brand new for 50. Great time to be just getting involved.

Get some downloadable games too; Bastion, From Dust, Trials HD (essential), Shadow Complex, Limbo, Flower.

I'm actually pretty jealous of you Boo! All this goodness awaits...it's like meeting someone who has never watched The Wire.

Do yourself a favor and buy this masterpiece:

Play it on the 360, as far as i know the PS3 port is bad.

I have never watched The Wire.

I know people rave about it, but is it really that good? I mean, it can't be better than Hill Street Blues, right?

If we're talking 'must have' games, as old and tired as the games may be by now, I'd say for the X360 Halo 3 / Reach, CoD4 and/or Modern Warfare 2, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2, Arkham Asylum, Forza 3 and/or 4, Trials HD, Skyrim.

I'd say definitely the ICO Shadow of the Colossus HD collection on PS3, but I don't own a PS3.

Portal and Portal 2 are a must. Also, xbla triple pack disc can be bough for less than 10 (trials HD, limbo and splosion man)
  • Deleted user 6 January 2012 11:21:26
There are seven games I consider to be solid 10/10s for this gen.

    Uncharted 2
    Cod 4
    Bayonetta
    L4D 2
    Valkryia Chronicles
    Portal 2
    The Orange Box

You cant go wrong with either of those games imo. Best of the best etc. Out of those L4D 2 is the one you may have trouble with as it's mainly co op but the rest should be fine.

If you suck at fps but want the shining example of the generation, I'd steer away from halo and go for Bioshock.

Yeah, Bioshock's barely an FPS at all really, it's so much better than that. If you love exploring worlds then it will be right up your alley.

Also can't believe nobody's mentioned Crackdown for 360. Short memories!

As far as I'm concerned, these are my favourite disc-based games of the generation so far. Bear in mind that I haven't played most of the releases from the end of last year yet before you get cross at me not including something. :)

    Assassin's Creed II
    Batman: Arkham Asylum
    BioShock
    Borderlands
    Crackdown
    Dead Space
    Fallout 3
Grand Theft Auto IV + DLCs
    Mass Effect
    Red Dead Redemption
    The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
    The Orange Box

    X360
    Halo Reach
    Bayonetta
    Vanquish
    Splinter Cell: Conviction
Forza 4 (far better than the GT series for my money)
    Alan Wake
    Mass Effect 1, 2, 3

    PS3
    Uncharted 1, 2, 3
God of War 3 (and the HD collection if you haven't played them)
    Heavy Rain
    InFamous

    Control pad of choice
Modern Warfare (the SP is great, and will prime you for 2 and 3 if you fancy)
    Portal 2
    Batman AA, AC
    Split/Second
    GTA4
    Red Dead Redemption
    LA Noire
    Darksiders
    Bioshock
    Skyrim
Dirt 3 (if you like to rally)

If you do go for GTA IV or RDR or BioShock or Skyrim or Modern Warfare or Batman... be advised, they're all better on the 360.

I think boo is looking for the very best games of the generation, not quite good games released in 2008/2009...

Halo ODST isn't as good as Halo 3 or Reach, and Wet is just painfully average.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 is a good call, but make sure you play them in order. Unlike COD/ Gears/ Halo games, the story is actually good so it's worth playing them in order

Each to their own Andy and its "My" list, I thought Halo 3 was overblown hyped shite but really liked the tight moody guerilla warfare campaign of ODST.

Plus WET was/still is fucking good fun, like a cheesy 80s action movie crossed with tarantino.
