The pre made maps are the only concern for me. How much extra work would it have been to keep the core of the map fixed and have cars /desks and other items move position?

@AaronTurner Personally I don't think it is much to worry about. Having just replayed the original, it is rather striking how similar all maps are despite being randomly generated. We'll see I suppose, but for me it won't be much of a problem since the aliens will be spawning in different locations and have randomized patrol routines etc.

Looking forward to this so bloody much. Haven't been this excited for a game since my early teens (bloody long time ago). Generally they seem to have made some really good choices in what to include/exclude from the original. Roll on next Friday. :)

It is worrying how little this is getting pushed. Today every shop I went to had loads of dishonoured posters etc (including the supermarkets) but I have yet to see any coverage for xcom outside of gaming websites.

Move along, go back to playing Bejeweled on your Ipad or something.

So what's the deal here, if I buy on Steam I get to unlock it on Tuesday with a VPN? At what time?

I want this on Xbox but I really could be sad enough to get the PC version just for 3 days extra play :D

You buy it, pre-load it and then use a VPN at American release time to unlock it. It'd be around 5am Tuesday.

I hate to add fuel to the flame bait, but although i played both Xcom Games to death, i cannot see any way in which HD replicas of the original would have any appeal to the average gamer these days. I think Firaxis have done their absolute best to bottle the essence of the first game, while making it accessible for newcomers to the series. Hd replicas of the originals would have been commercial suicide. At least this current incarnation looks like it might get a few new people to the party, which at the end is what we need to happen if more Xcom games are to be made.

I watched the Idle Thumbs Twitch TV run through of playing the original game, they only managed 2 crash sites and got completely overwhelmed on a terror mission in over three hours of playing. Now I loved the original game but if it were an HD make over of that then it would never have been made.

It's still a great game but it certainly shows its age in design.

It got to a point where I had 18+ troops in a dropship, and 12 of them were cannon-fodder. Made for very long turns, and not so much care for my men/women, tbh. Battleship missions could last forever. Or you just sat your men at the bottom of the lifts, and passed a few dozen times. The aliens normally came out and got auto-shot.

I hope 6 isn't too few, on the other hand.

In my play through of the original last week I mostly went with six soldiers and one or two tanks.

Tanks to spot and be plasma magnets while soldiers took the kills.

Although I'm under the impression the SHIVs in this take the place of an actual soldier rather than supplement the squad, the maps seem small enough that 4-6 should be fine.

Yeah, the latter stages of my current UFO playthrough have gone much the same way as the others - squads of 5 or 6 highly trained, competent troops in Flying suits, bearing Heavy plasmas, with perhaps one guy with a Blaster Launcher and one Psychic. Tanks come along for Terror missions or base assaults, although if all my Avengers are beaten up, then having to go in a Lightning means I can't take vehicles anyway. It is a bit disconcerting that you won't be able to use your rookie men as human recon devices early in the game, while they are all still rubbish, but perhaps that will just make me treat them all a bit more carefully.

Also, UFO is my favourite game of all time, hands down. However, it is riddled with stuff that would rightly be streamlined in the modern age - navigating your way through the base management, especially the research and manufacture screens, is full of redundant mouse clicks and pointless granular levels of confirmation panels. The loadout screen would not remember which troops had which equipment last time, particularly if your soldiers had been injured, killed or moved off the craft, and restructuring all the loadouts every time something changed was a little bit gruelling, especially when you had groomed your balanced squad to be good at particular things with particular equipment.

I'm sure that each day leading up to the release is getting a little bit longer.

Has anyone reviewed the console versions?

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.
