@RedSparrows - Ahhh. But I have a cunning plan Me'Lord. As it stands currently, using the 2nd wave stuff I can get troopers with 110-125 aim and 100ish will. It's only the first 10 or so missions that're the the danger, from there it's kinda plain sailing (I hope...)

If God said “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you,” to Mary - does that mean he loves bukkake?

I haven't tried it since that 2nd Wave thing. I might well do so: I'll beat the game by cheating more than it does!

@RedSparrows - hahah, agreed. It doesn't save you automatically, but it does mean your troopers won't miss barn doors at 20 paces...

I like the second wave stuff but see it as anall-or-nothing thing. So if you're going to vary soldier accuracy, vary weapon accuracy etc as well. Otherwise it feels like cherry picking your way to a win ;)

TBH it's just to pop the the cheevo quickly, so I don't spend the rest of the year trying!

I'm surprised using second wave stuff doesn't disable the acheivements. As it seems like you could use as a bit of a cheat if you cherry pick which ones you use as LB says.

On another note, XCOM kicked my arse (again) at the weekend. Came across a landed small scout so I took my B team and a couple of squaddies with arc throwers.

The game decides to throw 3 heavy floaters 2 mutons and a beserker at me. Can just about handle that.

Next turn it teleports 3 muton elites into the middle of my group. Cue squad wipe. My heavy major was a big loss as I find it really hard to level up heavies at this stage of the game.

I beat the game C/I fair and square. I'd rather nuke Impossible using 2nd Wave, and then do a C/I game for the fun.

I think I've just about come to terms with CI, but I think that may be my ceiling. Can't imagine impossible is much fun.

I'll probably give a try though.

Fancy a bit of XCOM retro? The RGOTW group is currently doing Rebelstar, an early Gollop game.

I played a lot of LaserSquadNemesis back in the day. Turn based but with a difference, where you gave 10 seconds of instructions to your men, as did your opponent, and then both turns played out in sync.

Excellent game, let down slightly by extremely limited AI commands vs a huge ten second window where they're left to their own devices. NO DON'T STOP BECAUSE YOU SAW A SNIPER YOU MORON HE'S GOING TO SHOOT THE FUCK OUT OF YOU ACK NOW YOU'RE DEAD.

I played it too! Did quite well to begin with but then work/life took over and I stopped dead. Even read part of Crank's Grenadiers guide or whatever is was called.

I'm sure I recognise some names on here from LSN.

Well you weren't queuing enough orders then :)

I was around until things really died off, the great w00t/TJ board schism didn't help. It's still going, just, few guys running a server.

Haha! Not queuing the right orders! Having said that, the number of times I did exactly that. Ugh.

Grunts spot. Grenades kill. The rest is filler.

Just found the old forum, with a post about getting schooled by a top player. 2006 I stopped playing.

And the LSN server has gone! How sad.

You can still get a game, some faff required I think. Should never get shot by a sniper certainly, they were just vision and area denial really, nearly 3 seconds to get off an aimed shot, dance away from that and leave him just looking down the street.

The perfect through-a-window grenade, at the feet of a couple of enemies, due to explode 0.3 seconds into the next turn, was about as good as gaming gets, also using marines as grenade bumpers to chest them back the way they came :)

Hey All, quick question for you. How much would you be willing to pay to have Xcom on the ipad? £5? £10? I think it would be a perfect fit, and i can see myself playing for hours on the train etc.

I would pay full price to have it on Vita.

I would pay up to £10/£15 as I got the Xbox version full price :p
Never happy about paying the same again for a title on a different platform.

How many Psionics would you recommend for the final mission on classic? I currently only have have 1 colonel assualt, 1 cpt assault and a major heavy (who has suppression / holo targeting so I don't really like her much) who have the gift.

I also dont know whether to go 2 x Sniper, 1 x heavy, 1 x support, 2 x assualt. Or whether I should swap out a sniper for another heavy.

    Decisions....

Personally I'd swap out one of the assaults for a second heavy.

That was my original plan, but excluding the supressing heavy that I'm not so keen on, my only two psi's are the two assaults.

I do currently have a heavy major in testing who I just got from a council mission. Fingers crossed he has the gift.

I'd swap assault for another support. Especially if you've not done that part before.

I ran two snipers, two heavys, one assault, one support. Heavys with HEAT, snipers with double tap, it isn't that hard if you take it slowly.

Lie with passion and be forever damned...

Yeah. Also, make sure you make use of the special gift thing. There are a couple of situations where that's the bomb...

I've done it before. But on normal. Think I'll be fine up until the final room. From what I remember its a couple of ethereals an uber ethereal and a few muton elites. May have that wrong though. I just cant remember how many psi soldiers I took. I'm thinking a couple should suffice?
