Also when you first use a grenade to kill a sectiod. Like weapon fragments are more important than a soldiers life.

XCOM kicked my ass last night.
Squad wipe on a large UFO mission out of nowhere after having felt pretty strong in the missions before (hadn't lost anyone in ages). 5 out of 6 were ranked above captain.
I then stupidly decided to do the base attack campaign mission. My reasoning was that I had left it for so long already, and I from what I understand, the aliens will just be tougher the longer I wait. So I sent my remaining 6 decent guys in.
It started very positively, I moved very slowly and took out a couple of Mutons and a Berserker as they appeared. I got to what I assume was the final area and 6 Mutons, a Berserker and a couple of the flying things appeared. I took the Beserker out first using up pretty much all my moves. I braced myself for a grenade attack from the Mutons, and they didn't disappoint. Cue panic and death.
I believe I was down to about 3 now and I was doing OK slowly killing the last enemies on screen, but then, 5 more Mutons and 2 Beserkers appeared. They killed 2 of mine quickly, leaving only my Corporal Sniper (my one and only Corporal), I backtracked hoping that if I got far enough away that they would leave me be (I had never tried it before and was assuming that's how it worked) - they didn't.
He was on 1 bar of health and I forgot that I couldn't leave the mission (no warning screen when I tried tbf), and when I did, he was "KIA" as well.
Ugh. I am feeling very despondent now. This game has broken my spirit in a way only the Souls games have.
I am struggling to find the will to carry on playing. I can't imagine getting through missions with 6 rookies with the Aliens that I have "unlocked" in my game appearing. I felt like I was doing so well with the Geoscape side of things, and I'm not sure what would change if I started a new game. I didn't have all of my squad using Plasma weapons yet, but I didn't think I would need to be so kitted out for only the 3rd (4th?) story mission.
It hurts, it hurts so bad.

I think I'm done until I make some changes to my PC.
I had a problem with occasional crashes but they stopped.
I'm now on a UFO crash mission where I wiped my squad, reloaded and just on the last alien the PC crashed.
Then I wiped again (in much the same way as the first time).
Then the PC crashed and I got sick of doing the same bloody mission.
Now, after probably a month long gap I went back to it. Got to the last alien. PC crashed.
I'm now sick to death of this damn mission, so until I get myself a new graphics card Xcom is in the fridge. >
You are very good at getting me to feel passionate about this game. I think I need to start talking to my squad (TV) and getting proper attached to the mission at hand.
Seeing as you have successfully completed the game, I know now reading your wise words that I wasn't really doing things the right way. For example I put everyone with a spare move (when I don't want to advance more) on Overwatch. I also haven't used combat stims. I usually have 3 with medikits and the rest with the armour undershirt or whatever it is. Oh and I push assault to the front. Actually, I push everyone to the front other than my sniper - usually in a nice little line behind the same cover if it's long enough. I now realize how foolish this tactic is.
So now I sit with 25 or so rookies. Should I try again with better planning on the battlefield, or push on and try turn my ragtag bunch into heroes?

Well, you could see what the next mission is, if it's something easy, there's your chance to get back on your feet possibly.
Personally, I kit almost everyone out with the Scope. One Support with Med Kit and Stun Gun, one guy with a grenade.

I completed the base assault on CI last night. Not even a scratch. My squad sight sniper was an absolute beast with double tap. On the many open areas i just held him back at the start of the room and advanced everyone forward slowly. 2 supports and an assault first. Closely followed by 2 heavies. One with 3 rockets the other with supression and holo targeting.
I nearly quit my current game after a squad wipe of my best soldiers incl. 2 colonels. But I stuck with it and i'm glad I did.
If you have plasma it can be done. Try and get those rookies in titan armour asap though....
Ok, thanks guys. I'm going to go for it and hopefully I'll be here in the morning to tell you the tale.
I'm going to get titan armour into production asap as well as a couple of light plasma rifles and just give it a shot.
Quite excited now haha
I'll name the squad after you lot that have helped me in this thread. Now you all have a personal stake in this battle.

Interesting attack layout there. I went with that in the first game I played, but now I tend to run this:
The Assault gets stuck in, due to Lightning Reflexes (hello insta-miss), Rapid Fire and Run&Gun. Support is usually secondary trigger and scout in case the Assault needs... erm, support! The Heavies and Snipers are there to double fire/rocket on what gets spotted or aggroed into attacking.
You get too many robotic enemies later on to not pack two Heavies with HEAT ammo. It's even more beneficial if a Heavy is the "volunteer" so the Rift psi ability gets the boost from HEAT as well. It can make instant mincemeat of even Sectopods.

I love this game but Ive stopped playing it so I can get it on iOS and play it on my iPAD in bed, just hope the controls are up top scratch, anyone have a release date?
Depending on the mission I'll take:
For "inside" missions this is my set-up, the Heavy can move surprisingly fast and has increased mobility due to using Archangel armour (starts off as a skeleton suit). The Assault troops go in using only full cover, the one in front is the defensive (wearing Ghost armour) and the other is offensive (wearing whatever I think will be best for the mission, usually Titan armour). The support troops are both medics basically, the one on the right has the psych/smoke and the other has normal smoke. I chose in the zone for the sniper because a free move is damned good, you can take out every flying enemy with squadsight and still get to take a full move afterwards...
Pretty much the same skills as the inside except I remove the offensive assault trooper in favour of another sniper with squadsight, but that one has double-tap.
Terror missions usually now involve only assault and 2 support, 4 assault troopers will decimate anything they come across on these small maps. Truly a sight to behold when all the chrysallids you reveal get blown to pieces by free overwatch shots

Yay! "Wet work", "aint no cavalry coming" and that one where you do a classic/impossible UFO splash with one soldier? DONE! All I need to do now is complete the game on impossible and do a playthrough from NA and I'll have the trophy - finally...
Impossible playthrough is absurd. I got near the Alien Base and one bad mission ruined me totally.
