Just finished the game on Normal, not Ironman although I never used a reload.

Love loved loved the first half, but as my tactics got more efficient and the enemies got tougher it started to feel more like a chore. I was never in much danger of losing (though I did lose soldiers here and there, most notably a 50-kill veteran on my second last mission), but if I did anything adventurous it was sure to end in tears, which resulted in very slow, very rigid progress and it stopped feeling too much like fun sadly. Without fail, the abduction and terror missions were far more fun than the UFO missions, I'm not sure why that is, they just felt more fluid and dynamic to me.

A bit burnt out now but will probably do a second playthrough in a few months, with any expansion packs or tweaks they might have made in the meantime.

SHIVs are pretty much essential against Ethereals. On Classic anyway, it seems.

Which is a bit of a bugger as mine just went pop and the skinny wankers are showing up all over the shop.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Trophies/Achievements are up for the Slingshot DLC.

Seem to be all mission based ones bar bringing the triad character on the last mission. Hmm, wonder what his skill set will be.

    Here you go!

Alloy Cannon shots aren't reflectable (only plasma/laser-type weapons are).

Can't say I've ever used a SHIV beyond 30secs on 1 mission given that they seem so expensive to build, equip and maintain but I assume they can't be mind-controlled?

Ohhh, that's a good tip (the alloy cannon).

I'd forgotten using SHIVs on my NI game - Ethereals just seem to ignore them. So, you can use your SHIV to keep an Ethereal visible while you move your troops where you want them.

Sectoid Psi attacks and Thin Man poison attacks wouldn't work against them, but does that mean that they won't try? I've not seen them try these attacks against a SHIV yet.

I think I'm about to abandon a mission for the first time. I'm assulting a large UFO with 18 enemies, I've killed two sectopods and just discovered a third and I have an Ethereal to come.

I have my corporal heavy down, was bleeding out but stable now. Several other team members on half or low health and no medkits left. If I don't leave now, I will certainly lose more people.

If I do abandon the mission, am I going to lose my heavy which has been stablilised? I presume so?

Mildly depressing that after only four weeks on sale x com is 38 in the chart.

I'd advise abandon, yet I know I wouldn't be able to do that myself.

Have you got a sniper with disabling shot? Or any sniper? Are all the other aliens dead? Maybe go for it then, if you think you can do the Ethereal.

Ethereal. Shouldn't they be calling it 'The Wireshark' now?

Did anyone else get a council request for 8 heavy plasmas for 3400 odd credits? I did it, and now have more money than i know what to do with, (also with complete satellite coverage). but am low on alien materials. just did the first base, which was surprisingly easy, although the little blighter mind controlled one of my best dudes, so had to kill him rather than capture him to save my guy. Does it ramp up after this?

Yes, it most certainly will. Those little blighters will be populating every UFO from now on, and there's a bunch of tougher enemies yet to come.

Sadly I'm going to have to leave the guy behind to suffer at the hands of the alien scum. I've learnt several things, on tough missions, ALWAYS take two supports, and the REVIVE ability is not as pointless as I thought....

Pretty much my exact sentiments - and why I'm doubtful I'll give it a replay. Started a C/I game, but teleporting enemies can fuck right off (never had those on my Normal Ironman game).

Still had a lot of fun, though.

    Some thoughts and questions.

That domino effect thing I go on about? Could that be as a result of loud noise or alien communication? I've noticed that when I crash through a window, I'll often get the noise effect straight after, as if I've disturbed something. Also, I've noticed Sectoids and Thin men apparently calling. Is this for reinforcements, or as a warning?

    Questions:
Can you catch a Cyberdisc? Can you catch a Chrysallid?

Do you think the stats at the end are accurate?

I didn't feel like I was hurrying, but I finished in about half the global average number of days. And my score was about 10% of the global average. This is on Normal.

Then again I didn't hang around to build all the foundry stuff, so maybe that's it.

I was pretty much on par with the averages - other than the score, which was also maybe about 10%. Not sure if it's right.

Right. Fucksticks. Trying for what is probably the hardest achievement in the game - where you need to clear a downed UFO with one soldier on Classic (or Impossible if you're a maniac).

Just can't figure out how to address it, given you encounter aliens in groups of three and you're all on your lonesome. I was wondering whether it'd be possible right at the start, with some fiendish luck (and the fact that your grenade will straight kill sectoids). Other than that my current attempt - small UFO with a Heavy Colonel - is going to shit double quick.

    Any thoughts?

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Oh, and it's becoming very obvious from my Classic run through that I absolutely blitzed Normal, there's a whole ton of stuff that I haven't seen before!

Yikes, trying to do a UFO mission with only one unit sounds mental.
I would go in with a heavy that has the shredder perk and blow shit up. I think that achievement will need a good amount of luck.

I was surprised to see my (only surviving) assault-class soldier develop to be a headless killing machine. She's deadly with a scatter laser, auto-dodges the first overwatch shot fired at her, can dash and then fire at the end, and she'll happily release two or three overwatch shots during the alien activity - even if she's not set to overwatch. I imagine she could take on a scout UFO (with no cyberdiscs and no more than one sectoid commander).

If only her condition made her invulnerable to headshots. :(

Incidentally, last week I thought people here were whining pansies for complaining about cyberdiscs, as I'd seen one and crushed it instantly. It wasn't until this week that one survived long enough to WHAT THE FUCK IS IT DOING IT'S OPENING OH MY GOD NOOOOOOOOOOOO

Are Steam's cloud saves working for anybody?

True, though looking on the bright side, I think they've done more than enough to test and pass the proof of concept. It wouldn't surprise me if we see either a lot of bolt-on / DLC content for this, or a few more games in the genre, looking to build on the solid base this has.

I could well be out here, but it has the feel of a good debut album, with great things to come...

Spoke to a few friends of mine recently about this and they had never heard of it so I'm sure is are a lot of people out there with no idea this game is even in the shop.

I've been trying to do my bit by spreading the word but I fear they judge the game harshly as soon as I say strategy. Most of my mates are CoD players because the adverts tell them to be, unfortunately.

Only specialist game shops have even been selling it, it's never made it to the supermarket shelves hence no chance of breaking out of its niche, sadly. Despite being a definite GOTY contender.

Currently playing: Standing In A Car Park Simulator 2013

@PenguinJim :) re your comment about opening up.

I'm still delighted it cost me 23. Talk about value for money.

Sam carter is ridiculously good now, col. Assault with titan armour, psychic etc etc.

My only issue is lack of flanking. If I try and flank enemies the battle between the characters in the centre is over before the flanking character can get there. Plus if you spread you soldiers out to potentially set up any future flanking leaves your individuals dangerously isolated. Finally most flflanking requires dashing into unexplored map which could suddenly triple the threats, there is little reward compared to the huge risks.

It's a terrible tactic on open levels for that reason. However, in busy built-up leves, or in the UFOs, it works quite well. A nice little trick is to use the hookshot to pull yourself behind an enemy position and gain a nice big flanking & elevation bonus. Assuming you don't find yourself having to hookshot back out of danger, of course.

I think the PC version will have a long sales life. It's going to appear in a lot of end-of-year round-up's and top-ten's too. Anecdotally a lot of people on my Steam friends list have it.

Firaxis just need to get a decent DLC out so I can throw money at them.
