Oh dear, bad mission for the forumites last night. Speedoftgepuna, Tonka and Petrach all got nailed by Outsiders and Floaters when they tried to enter a downed UFO.

    Shamble

I agree. One of the Firaxis graphics programmers is on another forum I go to and I posted as much. THey made it look like a generic action game, when the should have concentrated on the idea of meaningful loss.

It's like the opening of the TV series Oz where the person set up to be the lead character gets murdered during the show. You don't see it coming at all, which is why I still remember it.

Yeah it's like marketing thought that no one would buy the game it actually is and so tried to sell it on action - when for me they should have been selling it as a tactical squad game with a stragic overlayer and not have been so scared that people want to try something a little different

This worth getting for 360 or should I add to the pile of pc games I'll one day have a pc good enough to play?
  • Deleted user 12 October 2012 16:27:16
@spindle9988 I want to win the lotto, we don't always get what we really want. Dishonored getting crazy praise from everyone.

Oh dear, it's all going wrong again, but now I realise where my mistake is.

Everything was going smoothly then suddenly the panic levels in 5 or 6 countries went through the roof. I've been recruiting scientists when I should actually be focusing on getting every engineer I can lay my grubby little hands on. Getting the sats up is extremely hard work and that's proved a problem on both plays so far. 3rd time is a charm, so sod the eggheads, going all out for links and workshops this time instead of a few days off the research.

@spindle9988 so if both in stock will it be.

Retail member of staff "sir we are closing the store can you please decide, you have been holding those two games and reading the back of their boxes for two hours now."

That's really nice - I was grinning to myself at the pain I was inflicting on Sectoids and Floaters last night, and I was trying to figure out what their animal animations reminded me of - some of the gesturing when sectoids get mind-melded just looks like brazen alien bravado, and makes me want to shoot them in the face even more.

I could have done without listening to even that small snippet of the music again, I am already missing playing the game, and that certainly didn't help.

Nooooo!! Tom Clancy is dead after being surrounded and zapped by pathetic un-american alien scum!!!

(Charles Stross and Peter F Hamilton avenged him, though...)

    @mowgli

As far the comparison between the two demos is concerned, I don't think you'd be missing out on anything by going for 360 version. There didn't really seem to be much in it other than sharper visuals. I'm playing the PC version with the 360 pad and it works really well.

I'd say get it on the 360.

I am taking a break after each mission to let the beauty of it all sink in.Really takes me back to the early days of my gaming enjoyment.

One guy dies, and a super duper Sniper roles into the mix.

Tim Kjell gets promoted to Lieutenant but sent to hospital from a scary moment of a Sectoid ambush. Now 12 kills from 5 missions.

SO my colonel ( the guy who survives the tutorial mission) finally died. Made me lose hope. however i was financially fucked anyway so i just let the world turn and looked at some research til the world burned. Got a bit more of an idea what im doing now. think should concentrate on getting some sats up soon as posible this time. Might try classic rather than normal this time though.

    my new mantra.

I just had a shit ting happen that has pretty much ruined my ironman game. I was fighting two mutons, killed one and the other was down to two health. I accidently pressed end turn and the muton critically hit my guy for nine and killed him. That not all though, suddenly, in the middle of the battlefield a cyber disc thing just magically appeared with two drones during the computers turn and it just fully killed two guys and made another panic. I had no choice other than to get my two chaps that were alive out of there and leave the panicked guy.

What the fuck is that all about? I know the aliens beam in on some missions but this was a normal mission, its never happened before and there was no warning.

Well I'm still on my original playthrough I started yesterday afternoon.
Everythings starting to go downhill due to me not building enough satellites early enough though. Panic levels are going through the roof, I think the end times are near.

Had some good missions today though, only lost 1 soldier in around 5 missions, got a couple of tanks now to help out and one of my chaps, LT Apone is a dab shot with his sniper rifle and has amassed 27 kills so far (I'm now scared to use him in case he dies!!).

Congrats to Firaxis on a job well done.

    tl;dr It's proper good this!

    Ho boy, yes it is.

Unless you are trying to defuse a bomb of course, in which case it can be a bit of a hindrance to speedily getting where you need to go.

I was full of fear on my first terror mission last night - everyone bar one of my five soldiers came back wounded, the fifth one returned in a body bag. One of the survivors, a Heavy who is also my highest ranking soldier, was nearly fatally attacked by a Chrysallid, despite Overwatch and Squad Sight Overwatch. What saved me in the end was dashing far away to try and regroup, and the Chrysallid being distracted by a nearby civilian, allowing me to rocket it and the zombie victim it created before the poison could kill my badly wounded Heavy.

I always leave at least 1 guy behind back in case a couple of aliens drop in behind me, it doesn't happen often, but it does happen. That can be tough if your squad size is still 4 though.

It's all about the flanking really, flank or be flanked. It's better to be a flanker than to be flanked.

/flanks merrily away, with a touch of dread.

Hmm, I just started a classic game and my team have missed 12 45% chances in a row. What are the odds on that?

People should use bounding overwatch in any tactical shooter, whether it's this or an FPS.

But I don;t think overwatch is the most important thing, because it eats up a hunker down and a reload opportunity.

On my most tactically pleasing mission I had people that were exposed hunker down, people in safe areas overwatch and everyone else reload.

That way I minimised the chance of taking a hit, still got to shoot as enemies moved and had full ammo for some people in the next turn.

Nah, certainly not on ironman mode if there are those sort of bugs in the game. That's just a waste of 8 hours.

Rookie who has killed a sectoid, gets hit by another one, he panics causing two other squadmates to panic as well, in his panic he returns fire at the sectoid who shot him, kills sectoid, up pops a promotion notification.

For cowardice under fire and luckily shooting the enemy in the face have a promotion soldier. :-)

Love escorting people back and hostiles pop up from nowhere. And you have to tactically reevaluate the situation.I now have my troops surround the escort target and move back as one.

I think the new patch may be bugged. When I discover aliens they move, then I get the reveal cinematic and then they move again.

My game is completely toileted. Aliens moving twice, aliens spawning right beside my squad and now I get one of my squad to reload their weapon and the guy acts like he is on overwatch next turn anyway. All since the patch.

Well I'd love to play the game tonight but the two nearest HMV's in London had sold out at 5pm. I spoke to one and they said they had 'a few' on xbox and PS3 delivered. Clearly they didn't think it was going to sell well.
