    petition

a bill that would create America’s first Internet censorship system is going to a full committee for a vote, and is likely to pass. This week, millions of us will protest censorship, censoring our own posts and asking you to call Congress. We need your help - please make a call right now.

[link url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhwuXNv8fJM&feature=g-logo&ct know if this was posted before, if so could one of the mods merge this into the already existing thread.

My favourite quote from the debate has to be "I'm no technology nerd, but I just don't see it" when the topic of SOPA breaking the internet came up.

DB posted this in another thread, but here it is again. Interesting, for sure.

Anyway, in other news a major conservative US thinktank that supports copyright holders has come out... against SOPA.

I love thinktanks. The really big ones can hold fucking gallons of thoughts.

Can't see them actually doing it, even though it would be kind of awesome.

I'd say it was sabre-rattling if it was only one of them, but there's strength in numbers like the article says. I could see them all doing it if there isn't any progress on the anti-SOPA front. It includes eBay and Yahoo as well, apparently.

“This is a bipartisan piece of legislation which is extremely important,” Reid said Saturday. “I repeat, it is bipartisan. I hope we can have a productive couple of days, pass this bill, and move on to other matters.

Bipartisan just means both sides are wrong in this case.

Or rather both sides are just doing what lobbyists are telling them while cashing their "checks".

Bills like SOPA and NDAA make me despair. In both cases, the people in the worlds affected said they didn't want the bills. In the case of NDAA, they were ignored and it was signed into law anyway. Hopefully the same won't happen with SOPA.

Does this mean, we could get EG blacklisted in the states by linking to copyright material in this here forum?

I agree that something needs to be done against piracy but this bill seems way too draconian and not specific enough.

I am mildly amused that the threadstarter on SOPA is called "customfirmware".

I wonder where else they've tried that trick?
Britain has such a strong track record of standing up to America, after all.
