I still have the box for the Drag Racer. It's the only box for an old Lego set from my childhood that I still have which isn't for a train.
I also had that one. Good il loved it.

I had the original Space Lego when I was a kid. It was all kept in a box in the back room and was played with HEAVILY by myself and my nephew when he came to visit years later. I had the urge to dig it all out, rebuild and check what was missing a year or so ago and after buying a load of spares from eBay and a couple of sets I didn't actually own at the time, this was the end result:

I have quite a lot of pirate Lego at my mums. She is now urging me to take it away. Sadly she threw the boxes and instructions out despite me insisting I needed to keep them.

Did a part of that space set have a monorail type track for the rocket travel to the launch pad?

@D_arkTrooper awesome. Is that rocket with the moon in the background a printed piece or a sticker?

The Beta 1 Command Base had a short rail link between the main structure and where the triangular delta shaped rocket is situated on the base plate. This is a set I made up completely from spares bought from eBay.

    This set here.

I'm not quite sure which part you mean, but the only sticker I recall in the entire selection is on the flag pole (I've no idea which set that belongs to as again, it was just an odd piece in a job lot of spares I bought on eBay).

So I think to answer your question, its a printed piece.

Wow, that is so nice set! I used to have some of those as well. I had a big cargo spaceship, a bit similar than the big ship in video. And a space robot with batteries, lights and noise. :)

I still have a lot of old school castle legos somewhere - a big yellow and gray castles and some a little newer Robin Hood stuff. I should check them out.

I was offered that as a birthday present, but took money instead. Something I still regret some 20 years later.

    I do have this though:

Nice set, but a bit of a pig to build.

Oh yeah I forgot about the other 2 kick ass sets I had 6339. As a child I wasted so much time playing with those, ahh memories.

well when I got it I must of been 6-7 years old, absolutely amazing for my little mind and more importantly I've still got it somewhere still with the track, all the parts and presumably it still runs.

Shot my second stop motion epic last night, the grippingly titled 'Lego Technic 9390 : Alternate Build'

Coming soon to a youtube near you! (As) Soon! (As I've got it into iMovie and tweaked it about a bit.)

With exciting features, such as :

(Nearly) all the shots in focus this time!

    Considerably better lighting!

A less distracting background than our dining room table!

Featuring a cameo appearance by Series 8 minifig 'Evil Robot'.

    An Academy award surely awaits...

To be honest, I never really liked the Space Lego sets that came out after the original ones that I had as a kid. If memory serves, the sets that I had were from 1979-80 and I was only about 8ish then. After those, there seemed to be lots of kits that had special custom parts that seemed to be made just for one purpose. I guess that was a trend that continued on from that point forward and Lego (to me at least even at that young age) lost a certain "something".

I only really liked the Space Lego (even now I've only got Space, Star Wars and a but of Technic) and kept collecting right up until the second lot of Blacktron/Space Police II sets came out.

I do wish I'd bought more of the Space stuff from the 80's though. Some quality sets which I missed at the time, and can't really justify paying top dollar for on ebay.

You're not the only one who wants a Lego monorail! There's a thread about it over at Brickset.

Interestingly, one of the posters (LEGO_Nabii) is a Lego Designer, and he said that a) kids aren't interested in monorails now, and b) Lego would lose money on every set, so it's highly unlikely they'll ever make another one.

So if you've got one in the cupboard - don't throw it out!
