Just informal discussion really. On a sofa in a living room, at restaurant gatherings, etc. Usually starts off along the lines of how their religion informs their political views, as that's (normally) the context of the setting.

So 30 or 40 left-leaning politically active Christians hold revisionist views of the Bible.

I am fucking shocked at that statistic.

At least if you are going to make up a sample pool, dont make up one that invalidates your own argument.

I was talking to Newcastle the other day and was not surprised to learn that they enjoy books by Alan Titchmarsh but have diverse views on politics and wall-paint.

Owen Jones: not all socialists want to dance on Margaret Thatcher's grave. I want her to go on and on.

This is the guy who wrote Chavs. Although a lot of the article is a straightforward explanation and justification of the left's hatred of Thatcher he makes some very good points.

with few prospects of getting an affordable home thanks to her mass sell-off of council housing.
I keep seeing this, and I still don't follow the logic of it. How does increasing supply decrease cost?

Selling them to *people* who can then buy them. So how does that decrease the affordability to people?

I know there's a perceived problem with wealthy foreigners buying up housing stock inflating property prices, but that's a different market, surely? A Sheikh isn't in the market for a ex-council flat in Peckham.

Not really sure where to start with this. Ok, renting used to be a far more "acceptable" thing to do in the UK than it is nowadays, and renting from the state (in the guise of the local council) was for many poorer people the only way they could afford to move out of their parents' home.

Those council houses got sold, so they weren't available to rent anymore. Some people who bought their council homes moved out and made them available for rent, but not at the same price as before, at much higher "market rates". EDIT: after seeing your post immediately above, I should point out that the council homes were sold at massive discounts.

Those much higher rents are out of the reach of most people, so when poor people ended up moving into them, the state had to cover the difference in the form of housing benefit. Which is kinda mental when you think about it.

All the while, there's been a freeze on building new council homes. The supposed replacements- compulsory social housing in new developments in London, for example- have been worse than a joke, and decent, affordable properties just haven't been built.

This could all be resolved by a massive programme of building council homes, but that'll never happen for a number of reasons. Partly ideological (the state's not allowed to do anything nowadays except throw money at banks); but also the fact that, if such a programme were to be implemented, the hundreds of thousands of desperate people in the UK who live with their mums til they're 40 to save the money for a deposit (on a shoebox) would rightly think "fuck this for a game of soldiers, I'll rent instead"- they'd either rent one of the new council homes, or if they weren't eligible, one of the newly-affordable private lets (they'd have to ask less rapey rents if there was more competition provided by council housing).

So, it's not a case of "increasing the supply", in fact it's exactly the opposite: they've slashed the supply of affordable rental property, forcing people who'd otherwise be happy with a long-term assured tenancy (as in much of Europe) into the housing market. That in turn pushes up prices for buyers, but also profits: for sellers, developers, buy-to-let landlords and other people who generally vote Tory.

The above's very simplistic as this is a complex issue, but I think it's an adequate summary. If you want an example of a terminally broken market, the UK housing one's a good 'un.

We probably need to make a "Margaret Thatcher is actually dead, for real this time" thread, so we don't cause any confusion when this fake Thatcher death wish thread is bumped.
