    @Leoliansbro

It's well worth watching, and it struck me while watching just how many of the scenes were almost word-for-word accounts of the anecdotes people gave following her death (particularly the scene with maggie saying "you cant have gin at this time of night!" And the "i never understood funny ha-ha") lines.

At the time I assumed it was largely fictional, but in light of the last month it appears it had a lot more truth in it.

It will certainly make you see Major in a different light.

And yeah, the performances are great.

I didn't know about that before.

I can't see it getting through p'ment, but if, somehow, it does then I'm leaving the country.

2nd reading is the first time a Bill gets a decent hearing in the House. 1st reading is normally it just being introduced to Parliament.

I'm assuming this is a Private Member's Bill? Most of which never reach the statute books, so I wouldn't worry too much.

I would say given there is no Winston Churchill day it's fairly unlikely there will be a Thatcher day.

Isn't there already an Armed Forces Day?

Plus November 11th is already an established date, with exactly the right tone.

No we tried to get one in the 11th for that very reason. I don't know what happened to that proposal though.

    Come and get it cumslingers!

    1.2m

"The funeral of former prime minister Baroness Thatcher cost 1.2m to stage, lower than was estimated at the time."

How did the private members bill going the end?
If the feeling is still strong that Madge gets remembered every year, can we not just change Guy Fawkes to Margaret Thatcher and strip out all of the nasty sectarianism that goes along with Bonfire Night, for example? we can then keep the event the same, and everyone's happy.

Think I'll just switch everything off.

Would we still get to burn effigies every year?

A Margaret Thatcher Day would be in extremely poor taste IMO.

Yep, until an unfortunate incident in 2019, when someone mishears and burns The Fugees instead.

I agree as well. And if enough of those who decide (who were in turn chosen by the people) agree then it won't happen.

Problem is, if it does happen we kind of have to put up with that side of democracy as well.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Hence my semi-serious post above... it's practically an invitation to people to create a new bonfire night.

The people proposing this ridiculous idea are the type who seem to think that absolutely everyone in the country loves Maggie and are oblivious to just how controversial she was. All that stuff that happened during the whole death and funeral process - the street parties, the burning of effigies, mock-funerals etc will just become an annual occurrence.

People aren't just going to start loving the woman because she has a day named after her. If anything it's just going to perpetuate the bitterness.

It's like all the people that demanded a "Diana" day back in 97.

So, the bill to rename August Bank Holiday as "Margaret Thatcher Day" gets its second reading on Friday... http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2013-14/margaretthatcherday.html

    Here's the e-petition against it...: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/52411

Thatcher was an evil cunt who sold off as many of England's assets as she could, weakening our financial future. Why does that bitch deserve to be honored in this way? MAKES NO SENSE!!

I will support this name change provided we celebrate the holiday each year by publicly torturing and executing a member of her family.
