Similar situation for me and my Warheads. I figure I'll just have to use the Kinect as the mic, and output the voice through the speakers, and therefore the headset. Not that it really matters to me, I don't even have my mic plugged in.

    Blatant money grab.

    XBOX MUTE!

Voices out of the TV is awful, very hard to pick out during games. The old 360 headsets might not have been great but htey served a purpose. for the minute cost of including it and providing a choice it seems very tight-fisted.

If that works well enough, then it might be a workaround. So long as I'm not having to bawl across the room to make myself heard. God knows how loud that'd be in a challenging multiplayer match after a few beers when my dander's up!

What NECESSARY functionality would be impacted by making it work offline? Say I just want to play some SP games, have zero interest in chatting to 12 year olds, why does it NEED to be online?

Edit: and incidentally, I think it realistically requires broadband, so it's hardly the mainstream/majority who have that. Perhaps it's the majority of 360 owners, but I bet there is a massive percentage of them who don't have broadband too.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_broadband_Internet_subscriptions
Just had a quick look at that list (which is massively out of date - being that it's from 2010)

But Ireland is listed as below:

    50.Ireland 941,405 (total number of subs) 21.06% 2010

First of all the % is madness as it seems to forget that majority of subs account for entire families.

That kind of number would indicate almost complete broadband adoption and coverage in Ireland - we've only got about 4 million people for Christ sake!

Doesn't really back up your point if the list in the link is using the same kind of spurious data to gather it's % figures for all countries.
To add to this, I wonder what would happen if you correlate the people that spend money on consoles with broadband subs.

    Come and get it cumslingers!

They were never that great and required you to have the sound through the telly anyway.
There's a setting for if the sound is coming through the TV, because it's not supposed to be like that.

The original headsets that came with the launch 360s were pretty good, imo. The ones they released with the slims were less so.

If I were to get an XBOX, I would definitely factor in the price of a headset. Using Kinect sounds terrible, tbh.

Kinect's pretty smart. I'm sure it can factor out background noise well enough. I think they're trying to get you used to talking to your tv as much as possible.

My issue isn't as much with the talking, but the hearing. I don't want a bunch of idiots blasting over my TV with their profanities!

It's embarrassing enough a man of my age playing video games. :p

I found the original 360 headsets to be really uncomfortable after a while of use.

Getting them in the right position seemed to be difficult for some too given the amount of mouth-breathing you used to hear. Or worse, the dipshits who held the mic up to whatever shite music they were listening to.

It starts a two player game when mowgli walks in the room.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

Its impressive tech to be honest, but all a bit... useless. At least in regards to a games console.

Yeah. It's really smart. However, if I dev can't make at least one decent game utilising the features.

I dunno, perhaps a Silent Hill game that knows it's shitting you up and plays around with that? I agree with youm however; it's great tech but perhaps mainly superfluous for a games machine.

I find the voice control interesting, but the motion stuff a bit pointless. It's much easier to just press a button.

Really? You don't think it's that good and a bit pointless? Really? Never thought you'd say something negative as you've been nothing but positive so far.

    Weird.

The funny thing about the mandatory kinect is that it would probably have been better received had they not ever released it for the 360.

    I know, it's shocking isn't it. :)

    Seriously though,

Motion control (Wii, Move, Kinect), doesn't appeal to me. The voice control stuff sounds great though. Being able to just say what you want and it simply doing it with ease is great.

If implemented well, I can see it being quite useful. Hasn't the witcher 3 got voice controlled spells?

Imagine your Titan being ready for drop on titanfall, and instead of stopping, you could just say "drop here" or something.

Prrft I don't have to imagine I did that in Mass Effect 3. It's awesome when it works but when it doesn't it's fucking annoying.

Sounds to me like they might of improved it. I wonder if the problem was with accents...

My mrs often sits in the front room on the phone to her old dear when im on the pooter and kinect enabled games just cant cope with it.

Mass Effect 3 especially had her repeatedly using the charge shot power while jabbering on.

TBH, the new Kinect is getting a lot of very positive vibes from the mainstream news. I think it will contribute a lot to the sales of X1.

I'm sure you can still mute dickheads.
Maybe Kinect will do it for you?

Voice controlled stuff doesn't need a Kinect though. They could do all that with a headset.
