The BBC has settled with Lord McAlpine over his libel claim...

The damages, agreed 13 days after the broadcast, total £185,000 plus costs."The settlement is comprehensive and reflects the gravity of the allegations that were wrongly made," the corporation said in a statement

... the BBC will apologise to Lord McAlpine in court - but Lord McAlpine will also give a statement, in what our correspondent describes as an unusual step.

Lord McAlpine will say in his statement that he still holds the BBC in very high esteem, our correspondent adds.

Good, now maybe we can forget about that aspect of things and get on with the investigating (that goes for journalists as much as anyone else).

Daily Show covered the Jimmy Savile/BBC story last night. Pretty interesting to see it from an American perspective, seeing as nobody has heard of him there.

I found all the laughter somewhat uncomfortable. I appreciate the guy is a comedian but there's really not much that's funny about the subject or paedophiles in general.

    Still, was certainly interesting.

Was there any laughing at the eccentricities of Saville?

I imagine many Americans would be bewildered by his celebrity

I knew that myself and America had a common ground somewhere. I never understood why people liked Jimmy Savile, i always found him creepy and uncomfortable and never watched Jim'll Fix It because of that. I must have had a working Paedar as a kid.

It's a shame that the charities he worked for will miss out but then how many are better off now he's now lurking around them?

Even though he hates everyone, I have to give my dad some credit about Savile. I never saw much Jim’ll Fix it and the like when I was younger as my dad absolutely couldn’t stand him. He just saw him as a disgusting weirdo, so he wouldn’t have him on the telly.

I liked Savile when I was young. I thought he was funny.

We watched Jim'll Fix It as a family. I'm old enough to remember episodes like the scouts on the Blackpool Revolution ride first time around. Certainly my parents had no problem with him - my dad always watched his shows. But then my dad thought Jim Davidson's Chalkie White was a hilarious comic character.

Was only in my teens I thought Savile was creepy. Before that I thought he was cool - because he was so silly/odd - which young kids often funny.

The first of the "others" category in the Savile investigation to be charged?

" Ex-Coronation Street actor Andrew Lancel faces child sex charges

Former Coronation Street actor Andrew Lancel has been charged with historical child sex offences, police have said. The 42-year-old, who played Frank Foster in the ITV soap, faces five counts of indecent assault on a child under 16."

I recall with absolute clarity, thinking that he was a creepy fucker, he made my skin crawl. It was only because everyone else seemed okay with him that I watched his shows.

Strange how quiet this all got. I guess we're really not good at focussing on more than one big story at a time.

I think they're in "patiently waiting for results of police investigations and bbc inquiry" standby mode.

More news on the past / newspaper investigations for sure. The press collectively shit themselves once the BBC was sued for libel.

They did, so im sure that they are waiting for facts rather than speculating wildly about who next to be put on the sex offenders register.

Oddly well-timed: 82 year old former bbc broadcaster stuart hall has been arrested on historical allegations of rape.
