    To be fair, he was hardly alone in that assumption, everyone thought he looked like a creepy uncle. Who knew he was a creepy uncle who went balls deep in octogenarian cadavers while dreaming of fiddling with little girls?

    Totally forgot this thread started as RIP Savile.

    I think most people who watched things like the infamous Louis Theroux documentary suspected something.

    The journalist that broke the Savile story, Liz MacKean, died last week, she was 52.

    Ironic that it was from a stroke given how much Sir Jimmy was fond of a stroke.

    Worth a watch, it's the first show to directly question Savile's reputation and opened the floodgates. More innocent times.

    Savile being from the generation where you’re hardwired and programmed into thinking homosexuals are shameful freaks and abnormal, I just thought he was gay and barricaded in the closet with his “friend”, unwilling to reveal his true self, and the media obliged.

    How naive.

    I like Theroux’s output, but that show never should have been made. Louis and everyone involved obviously knew the truth, like pretty much everyone at the Beeb and wider media, so the show was an utter pisstake of the viewer.

    That it was even aired revealed much about the BBC’s integrity, never mind the coverup itself.

    Probably worth giving the following a watch. Theroux talks about the show at length

    With hindsight, it seems loads of BBC people were dropping some fairly unsubtle hints about Savile.

    I watched one of my old Doctor Who DVDs the other day and among the "bonus features" on the disc was a documentary about a Jim'll Fix It thing where some kid asked to be in Doctor Who, so they'd put together a short sketch with the kid appearing alongside the actors who were in the show at the time.

    In the accompanying interviews, talking about making the sketch, Colin Baker referred to Savile as being "More scary than any of the monsters I faced as The Doctor" - and he wasn't smiling or joking as he said it.

    That DVD was released before the Savile scandal broke - obviously, as the BBC would never have included the Jim'll Fix It clip afterward! - and Colin Baker was definitely dropping some very heavy hints that Savile was genuinely evil.

    Wasn't there also a "Have I Got News For You" episode where someone said pretty much the same thing?

    It's interesting, with hindsight, that people were saying the f**ker was a monster - quite bluntly but, presumably for legal reasons, keeping just a hairsbreadth shy of formal accusation - but nothing was ever done about it in Savile's lifetime.

    Speaking for myself as someone who was a kid when Jim'll fix it was showing, I knew nothing about paedophilia. Even as an adult, I'd never have imagined someone could do the things Saville did. It's really beyond the pale.

    From what little I know since, it seems he made sure he was well connected in the right places and probably had dirt on people too. Maybe it was the fear of what he'd say that it was only after his death that things started to emerge.

    Savile was on HIGNFY at some point, but the fabled transcript was a hoax;

    http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/rogerb/jokes/HIGNFY.txt

    All of this will likely been have discussed a million times in this thread, but the then unaired John Lydon radio piece from 1978 was interesting;

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rjy8oLVOvi4

    There'd been gags about for it years. In BBC's Early Doors from 2004 or so, the old dear in it cracked a joke along the lines of (paraphrasing, can't find the clip and years since I've seen it) "Have you heard (celebrity name, can't recall) has been done for kiddy fiddling? I swear, of all celebrities the only ones that can sleep at night are Jimmy Savile and Cliff Richard!".

    Richard Herring mentions now that the urban legend around entertainment circles at the time was that Saville was involved in visiting the mirgue rather than the other stuff to the extent we know about now

    I guess rather than a grand conspiracy that some imagine it to be there was probably a sense that everyone knew he was a wrong un but not exactly what, how much, how bad and no one dared ask or find out for sure

    I think I've heard Rich recently saying that they were just making jokes about anything and that one just sort of came out after Savile had died. He didn't specifically mean to target him.

    @Decks :lol:
