Anyone following Richard Herring or Ricky Gervais on Twitter will probably be aware of the furore going on about whether or not it's acceptable to use the word 'mong' as a casual insult.
Brief summary here- http://celebrity.aol.co.uk/2011/10/18/ricky-gervais-mong/ or go to Richard Herring's Twitter feed- http://twitter.com/#!/Herring1967 to see how things progressed.

I can see both points of view. Words do and have evolved away from their original meanings and intents. Has 'mong' done that yet?

I like both comedians a lot. Who is right? Or are neither?

What do the mongs on here think?

Bullshit link tags never seem to work properly, gah.

I'm sure it is to some older generations, or more well-to-do serious types. It's definitely losing it's offense in the traditional meaning though, I'd guess that most people under the age of 30 don't actually know it's origin.

Well yeah, it depends on context. But dropping it into casual conversation is just as offensive as using it as a genuine insult.

"What about the mongs, got anything in the mongs?"

Sorry, in-joke with myself. Mate used to work at West Ham and this was one bloke's attempt to get a ticket for a big game that was sold out.

I find it to be a terribly ugly and witless word. Always makes the user sound rather 'special' themselves.

No, mong isn't offensive anymore, he's toned things down and is a lot more tolerable nowadays.

Wait a minute. A word that is meant as an insult offends some people?

    Mind. Blown.

Wait a minute. Adults actually use the word mong in the real world, and not just on the internet?

Every girl I ever kissed I was thinking of a pro footballer.

Almost all our terms for those with below average IQ were originally terms for the seriously mentally or physically disadvantaged. Imbecile, idiot, spastic, retard and probably most others you can think of are a case in point. Some of them have lost or are losing their power to offend and just becoming normal words.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Years of diversity training has taught me that if someone somewhere could think that someone else somewhere else could find something offensive irrespective of whether or not they actually do then it is offensive.
