I was told to write Gb when doing copy for VG247. It's how it should be written, apparently.

    Bored so:

Thus the abbreviations for various multiples for bytes could be: kb, Mb, Gb and Eb, in all cases keeping the ‘b’ for byte lower-case as the general rule is: lower-case unless upper case is required. A lower-case ‘m’ for mega (which comes from the classical Greek megas meaning ‘huge’) would seem appropriate on the basis that the ‘m’ is derived from a classical language; however megabyte refers to a million bytes, and so the internationally accepted M for million in that metric system is usually preferred by editors.

Given that it's a technical term, I'm not sure I'd accept any answer from writingservices.eu as trumping the actual use in the hardware and software communities.

Lower case for bit. Upper case for byte.

Since it's sort of important to distinguish the two I'm surprised that this is the advice being handed out to writers, a group usually quite concerned with clear and unambiguous communication. Or maybe that's what the "lower case unless upper case is required" pertains to?

I seem to recall Nintendo wrestled with this with cartridges, but it just stuck with "meg" and let people presume whatever they wanted. :)

So I was thinking today about how the Xbox One has the better line-up, yet it still can't sway me. It's the little things like PS+ covering three systems, etc. I can live without Killer Instinct. Might get one when Halo comes out though.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't told to use it because writing.eu says I should. I've probably remembered wrongly anyway.

I'm with Phattso on this one. You don't want to confuse your bits with your bytes :)

Aren't Megabits only really used when talking about connection speeds, though?

Yay for peripheral price gouging! Seriously, a pad's the price of a game - except MS want you to also buy a charging kit.

They're really not doing well on pricing at all, are they.

If you looked at the obsessive, defensive idiocy that is their loyal fanbase you would charge what the fuck you want too.

Christ, people still stump up £30 for live. Be happy they aren't asking for a testicle.

It's weird when Apple are more Microsoft than Microsoft and people with Apple products criticise Microsoft for actually being less Apple than Apple. Whilst they're on their DRM'ed, locked down, no refunds iPads.
  • Deleted user 28 July 2013 14:18:46
    Haha, well that's nonsense.

Second pads are a bit of a luxury anyway, we're all hidden behind a wall of online, not playing Tekken 3 anymore...

People'll be stumping up for PSN, soon.

You can access Youtube and IE with Gold. We should be thanking Microsoft for such value.

I wonder what will be on offer on PS4 with PSN Plus. Won't be much, maybe free films or F2P bonuses. At least media apps, F2P and MMO are not behind a pay wall.

... and Netflix, which I already pay £5.99 a month and I have the immense privilege to be paying almost £40 a year to use it on my Xbox 360!

Yeah, PS+ across THREE platforms for £39 a year is just ridiculously good value for money.

    Um, whoa, whoa, whoa there-a-moment.

I just read that Polygon article.

Microsoft chose to ... chose to put AA batteries inside their controller?!

    *sighs*

No, no, NO, £39.99 is NOT £39, £39.99 is £40!!! Don't fall for their evil tricks!!! That penny is just price rhetoric!!!

(Also, it's been £32-35 for a year a few times in the past couple of months, so don't pay full price anyway! ;))

I get people over all the time. It's a great way to catch up without paying for dinner or coffee. Besides, fighting against anonymous people online is soulless. Okay for games that need a big pool of players, but for 2-4 people it's still more fun to have a pizza, beer, and Tekken night.

Gouging pads is their way of trying to convince you to become an antisocial online hermit. ;)

I guess when you look over the fence and see Apple do it to a whole generation then you have to give it a go.
Wasn't it Apple who started the normal headphone sockets in phone thing? I remember each phone requiring their own brand headphones previously.

Although their first iPhone, whilst it used normal headphone jack, had bits of raised plastic around it so only the official apple headphones would plug in. Thankfully they changed this when people went mental.

Yeah, I had a Sony phone with standard headphone jack years before the iPhone. Ditto my Nokia N series handsets.
