I still prefer the gamecube over the N64.

As do I. Did I mention Ikaruga and the Metroid: Primes last time? I think I didn't. Not only were Prime 1 and 2 the best adventure/shooter/whatever of that generation, but they had the best fans too.

I played through Goldeneye the other day. Holds up surprisingly well, once you've tweaked the controls for dual analogue. Though it did highlight how it was crafted around the weaknesses of the control scheme at the time - on dual analogue it becomes basically just a straightforward and rather easy run and gun, even on the 00 Agent difficulty. Stealth missions aside, of course.

I'd forgotten about the dual controls. Really quite something for the time.

Metroid Prime is very probably my fave game of all time.

Nah, second best, which is jolly good considering the number one game will never be moved ... ever.

It's not a patch on Super Metroid tbh.

They're both brilliant but I prefer MP, I don't think you can reasonably say that one is hugely better than the other.

Funnily I've never played any of the metroid games. Keep thinking I should but never got round to them.

Do SM and the prime games still hold up?

    They're all pretty great still.

Also, if you tell anyone I said this I'll have to burn down your house, but the Prime games are definitely better played on the Wii.

@RobTheBuilder I played Super Metroid for the first time a couple of years ago and it was excellent. If I'd have played it at release it might have blown my tiny little mind. God knows why I didn't, I had a SNES. I'd love to have it on my 3DS.

Prime is still a fantastic game as well, I replayed it fairly recently on the Wii Trilogy disc. I should get around to Echoes and Corruption at some point really, I've never played either.

FFXIV: ARR - Khroma Midgard, Odin.

Echoes is very good. Not played either for some time though, so dunno how they hold up compared to modern stuff.

Where's KentMonkey? He's the Metroid connoisseur.

Got Corruption here, still in it's cellophane. Never got any spark for it.

@Bremenacht I keep thinking I'll play Echoes soon, but then something else catches my eye. I have backlogs on every bloody machine, yet I keep buying more games.

FFXIV: ARR - Khroma Midgard, Odin.

Some clever gubbins in the the next gen consoles, probably.

I got Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii, and I couldn't help being somewhat disappointed. I love Super Metroid, and back in the days I thought it would be the greatest thing ever if that was 3D.

Maybe it's because 3D games have evolved so far by now, while Super Metroid is one of the ultimate 2D games.

Just started playing Super Metroid. It takes a while to get going, but it's interesting so far. Nothing amazing, but I'll stick with it.

Yeah I'm of this thought too.

Excellent link Bremenacht, I wonder if the existing next-gen console (WiiU) has a very similar setup for the POWER architecture.

The clever gubbins part of hUMA is the way it seamlessly handles the complexity and presents those efficiency benefits to the software developer automatically.

Strangely enough all these hUMA benefits can already be achieved on the pioneering heterogeneous design of the Cell BE (using its 256mb XDR as unified RAM). But hUMA clearly adds two significant benefits that changes the perception and hostility we have seen towards heterogeneous CPUs this generation.

First of all it takes all the communication/scheduling complexity back into the CPU and black boxes it away from the developer. The second part and final part of the puzzle is that it balances the number of general purpose CPU core resources so they compliment the number of GPU compute core resources. While reading through the slides it seems that the large scale supercomputer experiment IBM and AMD did with arrays of Cell BE using Opterons as scheduling nodes has produced a great R&D return for AMD.

So, Xbox Infinite could be the official name for the new Xbox then.
