Heh, social responsibility in effect that the ad is for McDonald's. it begs the question whether they'd have a problem if it was a payday loan company?

Do people visit the UK? I saw a TV show from there once. It used to be all wacky motels and funny voices but now it's unending, freezing rain and people full of disaffection and heroin. Also, all our children's entertainers who go there get accused of paedophilia.

Also, the latest series of Doctor Who has seriously declined over previous years.

All Doctor Who has done is make people interested in visiting quarries in Wales.

Microsoft cedes consoles to Sony, gives up on gaming

    Worth noting:
    1. The author.
    2. The significance of the bit you cannot read.

I might be missing something, but CD has been fairly clueless of late. That's not to say that he's wrong, but he's certainly no oracle.

I think he might have lost some of his pet AMD people.

At least the nVidia ranting appears to have stopped.

I suppose his biggest claim to fame was through showing that a presentation of 'real' early Fermi hardware was in fact a fake. With woodscrews in it.

A lot of his earlier notoriety came from his time at the Inquirer.

He kind of sullied himself with repeated nVidia ranting and bashing and dire predictions of nVdia financial collapse that just won't come true, but I still like reading his stuff.

Everyone's putting pressure on MS to reveal something about the 720 as if it's a personal insult that they haven't yet. Why should MS care when someone thinks they should do something? Look at how much people are talking about the 720 and MS hasn't directly said a single word about it! I'd say it has more buzz going for it than the already-revealed PS4. Good news or bad, people are talking about it and they can't wait.

Tbh, it's all going to be a disappointment; and in a year nobody will care whether MS had a 720 dev kit at GDC or not.

If MS come out with something that actually looks good I think going second will work out for them. People tend to remember the last thing they saw more clearly than something announced a few months back.

Personally I was underwhelmed with what I saw of the PS4. The spec looks great but what I really wanted to see is they show me some games that would blow me away but really all they showed was the Kill Zone game which although it looked nice it did not wow me.

So what MS need to do is real pull out all the stops and blow us away with lots of actual game footage. If they will actually do this or not is another matter. If they could show say 10 impressive looking next gen games that would easily beat the Sony announcement for me as ultimatley I want them to sell me on what the hardware can really do as opposed to listing tech specs. I suspect they wont do this and will concentrate on the type of fluff that gets the likes of the Gadget show excited. Which wont be what I want to see but still maybe that is where the money will be so it could be its not the wrong approach from a business perspective.

Didn't the PS3 launch start with something along the lines of 'the next gen doesn't start until we say so'?

I know that's a load of excuse-making bollocks but a delay in MS responding to the PS3 might reasonably said to be a) a timetable they'd had in mind way before Sony's announcement, b) a timetable which allows them to present a coherent package and not just a controller and some graphical promises / confirmation of developers, and c) evidence that MS is responding to Sony's offering, which is win-win for the non-fanboy consumer.

Also has he seen something about MS's release, like, at all?

What I'd like to see from MS is a revitalized RARE with Blast Corps 2, Killer Instinct 3, Conkers BFD 2, Perfect Dark 2 all in development.
Halo Wars 2 for kinect if as rumored kinect is included as standard, I fancy waving my hands and issuing voice commands to an army of Spartans

Modern RARE have nothing to do with the RARE of old, we've no idea how capable they are...

Firstly I can't see any of those games selling in significant enough numbers to be worth funding.
As AB says, we don't know how capable the current set-up actually is at producing those type of games.

Microsoft and Rare is like Chelsea and Man City. Buying good players they aren't even going to play just so no one else can have them.

I do hope that at least one of the new incoming consoles will be round. It makes sense, because our eyes are round.. If they are both square or even ob-long in form and nature, then I will seriously damage myself up.

Mark Cerny? Who knows. Having said that, if anyone knows anything I'd say a safe bet is that he does.

re: The whole 'he who goes first wins v's going second gives an edge as you can directly tailor your response' thing. It's a timing thing isn't it? If MS announce the 720 in May, with a presentation designed to counter Sony's February reveal, then that gives Sony the opportunity to counter again at E3. By that reasoning, it could be better for MS to hold off until E3, reducing Sony's chance to reply on the biggest stage of the year.

    Just a thought.

MS should never announce the 720. Just have it on shelves one day.

I actually thought that myself. If the product is good enough, and cheap enough would it sell well, regardless of marketing?

I have a vague memory of someone smarter than me saying something along the lines of 'The only reason companies advertise is because their competitors do' and that the net result - sales - is the same regardless of how much you spend, if your competitors spend the same amount. Or Sutin...

Do like with they did with the 360 slim, at E3 just go "Oh by the way, this will be in shops tomorrow".

    I'd laugh.

    Here we go!

On Tuesday May 21st, well mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment. On that day, well be holding a special press event on the Xbox campus and we invite you to join us via the live global stream that will be available on Xbox.com, Xbox LIVE and broadcast on Spike TV if you are in the US or Canada.

On that day, well share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, well continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.

We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what weve been working on.

    A New Generation Revealed
    Xbox Campus, Redmond WA
    Tuesday, May 21st @ 1p ET/10a PT/17:00 GMT
