Yeah, but he's saying the leaked specs are correct, which would already put them close to the PS4. Adding more on top sounds costly to me.

It's not like they're giving away 360s these days.

Seems a bit risky bundling a 360 inside, given the reliability.

@ronuds But if they know Sony's BC is next to useless for most people it makes sense to add it. I thought the add-on was a decent solution, but combining the SOC with durango is a great idea.

In theory that should provide a very useful boost. Although it could be that the SOC actually powers the user interface.

@cubbymoore That was the soldering mainly, plus this sounds like a newer version of the chip designed to be more reliable I would guess.

@RobTheBuilder - If they can keep the price down, I'm all for it.

@ronuds Agreed. Microsoft can't afford to be equal with Sony, they need to be ahead or cheaper. This could nudge it.

The 360 gfx chip is very good at up and down scaling I believe, which in theory could allow you to make an image on the new setup, then feed it to the old chip to scale or anti-alias.

    So the new rumours are

"this enables the next-gen console to play any game from the Windows App Store that has support for a controller."

I'm sure all half dozen or so of those games will guarantee a smash hit.

95% of those apps have probably just had someone start coding controller support for them.

That's the same rumour from a couple days ago.

Funny how a random pastebin post has turned into "a source inside Microsoft".

That's good as it boosts both the windows marketplace and the Xbox marketplace.

It's getting interesting if these are true

Work out cheaper and easier for indie developers shouldn't it. No console development kit needed

Hardware BC is an essential goodwill feature imho (especially in this digital download era), so it will be very interest to see how the 360 SoC interfaces with the DDR3 and if the chip contains the additional EDRam a 360 would have dedicated, if this rumour is true.

Logically, the 360's 10MB Edram will be embedded in the chip, making the Xenos part of the chip a very useful addition to the durango chip. It would be useful for generating deferred renderer buffers for things like shadowmaps, and therefore avoid stealing much in the way of RAM bandwidth away from the main chip. Unlike an APU/SPU processor core, I don't think the 360's 3x 2-way PPU units will add much in the way of performance, without potentially stealing too much RAM bandwidth from the Durango chip.

I always enjoy it when Vizzini makes a relevant contribution to a thread regarding processors and chip sets.

I agree, if it means for example the new chip wouldn't have to deal with all the scaling or antialiasing that could be very handy.

I try not to language comment on human people who type write "digital download" too often, but it's an annoying annoyance for me and I to see and look at the redundant redundancy of "digital download". It's a download. Just "download". Why do we need to specify that it's digital? Are there other kinds of downloads out there?

It doesn't matter to me that vizzini said it. I like vizzini's posts! I just hate the stupid expression "digital download".

It's like people who say "digital games" when they mean "download games". A game on a CD, DVD or BR is digital - it's made of 0s and 1s. Although in this case, "digital games" is a real expression and has a valid use - it means "video games", as opposed to real, physical games like board games or tennis (for example).

I try not to get ranty about it. But every month or two, I just can't resist a comment... :champo2:

    @PenguinJim

I can see why you dislike the term “digital download”, but it came into use with a change from analogue PSTN (DTE, DCE devices that involved the signal going through DAC<->ADC) that pre-dates the always on DRM and online download purchase.

When the telecoms infrastructure changed to digital (ISDN/ADSL/Fibre local loop and backbone, and domestic equipment, and in mobile telecoms) the term made sense to differentiate the old internet business model that existed on the infrastructure of older analogue telecoms.

@beastmaster Gadget show have spurted some almighty BOLLOCKS in their time.

I still remembered an mp3 player face off where a Creative Zen was deemed to have terrible sound quality, like "some sort of garbled electronic mess". The presenter then went on to look visibly disgusted at whatever he was listening to. Absolute balls. I highly doubt if you had put the Creative next to the iPod and Sony that were being reviewed, it would be some sort of audio mess.

The backward compatibility could be pretty good for me. There are a lot of games I have still not caught up on this generation so I can see being able to still catch up with them on the nextbox as being quite a selling point. It might make me get it earlier as I can still have one box under the TV.

A couple of must have launch titles and backward compatibility could see me picking up a nextbox much sooner than I was planning to. Without backward compatibility I would imagine I would wait quite a while until there are plenty of titles released for the next gen.

Of course this also depends on just how well the Nextbox stacks up to the PS4. I am personally expecting them to be pretty close so backward compatibility might be the MS special sauce.

Also shouldn't MS be sending out invites to their xbox event soon if it's on the 21st of May?

It'd pour a large amount of bullshit on that report if nothing happens on the 21st. :p

    Come and get it cumslingers!
