which just reports on this VGLEAKS Durango thing:

    http://www.vgleaks.com/durango-cpu-overview/
What I'm getting out of that is that the chip is codenamed "Oban" (commercial unit is "London", PS4 is "Liverpool" - all UK cities), and has 2 quad-core modules mounted on the chip. From other rumours reverberating around the net, MS have gone for a much stronger CPU and weaker GPU than Sony's solution, which may be why they went for DDR3 instead of GDDR5. Less about graphical oomph, more about raw computing power, basically.

Again, though, for sure we know jack shit.

Hmm, I guess the dragon could be a nod to voice control or siri like. They are known to be wise and teach humans to speak. Weirdly remember that for some reason.

My parents couldn't afford a dragon so I was taught to speak by a cat in a gekko costume

Oh God, that site's such a propaganda exercise. It'll only ever show tweets with things that are or will be possible. Alright, using your notion about using the XBox as an entertainment hub:-

"I want to use my XBox to record a TV programme via an aerial and then copy it to my Android tablet to watch any time and keep it forever."

    No?

"I want to play content from my DLNA NAS device."

    Bugger. Not that one either.

"I want to be locked into your proprietary formats so I have to buy more MS products to do the entertainment hub activities that I currently enjoy."

    Welcome aboard!

So, Microsoft fancy themselves as the hub of your entertainment. That's... exactly what they always wanted? They've just repackaged their old strategy in a new shiny wrapper.

  • Deleted user 28 February 2013 20:38:59
They both want to be. Sony were miles ahead of MS in those stakes for almost the entire current gen.

Will I be able to play xbox 720 games on my laptop via smart glass?

    That's the killer.

be a total change of heart since Microsoft killed all brilliant in house PC devs studios to push the xbox brand originally.

Well you'd still need to buy an xbox and xbox games. It would just be more like remote play.

Generally speaking my way of having an idea as to what a companies next system is going to be like is to look at what they've released recently. However with microsoft that won't work since from what I've heard from my insider at microsoft is all is not well there and there's quite a lot of infighting going on between departments and nobody seems to have any real idea as to what microsoft actually want to do outside of making every bit of software they have look the same regardless of what system you use it on.

So I have to go on recent xbox developments and in that regard I rather suspect the new xbox will have a lot of good ideas in it which will be hamfisted by stupid decsions on how to integrate them.

Microsoft has been that way for the last 20 years. There's nothing new there.

@sanctusmortis Seems weird just as everybody else moves to GPU heavy setup, that MS would move the other way.

@Psychotext That's the kind of bitching that leads to things like "It's a media centre" and "Won't real gamers love Kinect!"...

These things need a solid vision to guide them. I hope those rumours aren't as bad as they seem.

@RobTheBuilder maybe because GPU tech has stalled so much, they've decided one place to get an advantage would be AI and multitasking? I mean, if rumours are true, the new Xbox works like an Android or WP8 phone - multiple semi-suspended programs running at once, that you flick between at leisure.

So, for instance, you might have Skype messenger, Twitter and a game running at once, as well as a profile browser, that hitting the Guide or possibly Back button allows you to flick between as you need at any time. That'll benefit from some spare processing power.

There's also a new rumour doing the rounds that Sony have upped the clock speed on the CPU from 1.6 to 2GHz.

As in, there's no huge overhaul this year. Nvidia's getting commercial use for pro tech, AMD's bumping up its current tech.

Anyway, the head of Ustream's told IGN that the service is not exclusive to PS4 this gen. Wii U doesn't seem to use it, so...

There are rarely huge overhauls, only increases in speed and power and that has far from stalled.

@sanctusmortis I hardly think it's stalled. Plus given I have my phone next to me whenever I play xbox, I don't care about being able to multitask twitter... just up the gaming performance!

@RobTheBuilder no new GPU architecture at all for a whole year's a stall to me. Nvidia have no plans before 2014, and AMD plan to die shrink and adapt for the 8xxx series, building on Ares II as a viable alternative to the Titan.

I'm sure most ISPs will be very happy to be piping 100 gigabyte files around for people to watch.

    This space left intentionally blank.

Why advertise high-speed Internet then, highlighting download speed etc?
