I can't see a reason for a touch pad tbh. I mean I can't imagine a single possible use on a console game pad. Six-Axis was never that bad. If it had worked better I probably would've used it for driving games and stuff.

A touch screen seems like a much better option.

What about all the things that are only possible to do comfortably with a mouse pointer? RTS, point and clicks, web browsing, etc.

You wont do those comfortably with a tiny thing in the middle of a controller (especially if it's like the mockups, with the sticks getting in the way).

Put a mouse wheel thing in the middle of the controller. That would be awesome.

    Best controller:

    1) Traditional mouse design.
    2) 2 thumb sticks on top.
    3) 2 buttons and 2 triggers along the side.
    4) Wireless
    5) Accelerometer
    6) Gyros
    7) 3D space aware
    8) Always connected to Internet
    9) Plays bluray

Or they could just release a wireless mouse. That would be much easier.

Probably going to get shouted down for this but Kinect that can track fingers would be great for RTS games.

    Come and get it cumslingers!

    [SHOUTING]
How could you play it if you were drunk or tired? The idea of using Kinect to do repetative tasks sounds very tiresome, and stuff like RTS' are built on repetative tasks. Any controller that makes playing more tiresome or straining is a bad controller.

Meat grinder and sausage maker too? Call it the wobbly-bob controller!

Mouse pad would definitely be a surprise and great for console based RTS. Perhaps they could design the controller to be retractable. For example you can hold down a swich and bend or reconfigure the controller into a second form that' i more comfortable for mouse heave games or browsing.

That would be very cool, but very unlikely and difficult to pull off.
Given the relative lack of interest in the RTS genre these days, it seems unlikely they care about designing the controller for them.

You shouldn't be playing an RTS game whilst pissed. That's just stupid :p

Also repetitive tasks you can do via voice. "Build" "Research" "attack" "move" and you point your fingers where.

    Come and get it cumslingers!

That's interesting. The lack of RTS games that require a mouse is probably a by product of the popularity of consoles; which has shaped the types of games that get released on PC.

So it doesn't take a genius to work out that the massive popularity and proliferation of tablets may have a direct effect on the types of games developers make.

I guess I hoped that some developers would be driven by passion to create traditional games not by the balance sheet.

Dunno if we are headed for an Apple touchscreen future where nobody develops normal videogames.

That's another thing I don't understand. Why the fuck don't we have any decent "Core" RTS games on a tablet?

    Like Starcraft?

When you play an RTS game, do you use the pointer and left click to do everything?

The thought of holding your arm out in front of you to constantly micromanage your RTS units for hours at a time fills me with dread. The arm ache will be horrific. Did no one play any Wii games with pointer controls for any length of time?

A touchscreen/controller combo would be infinitely more practical than Kinect shoulder pain.

Yes, for hours with my hand resting on my knee, no problem.
You don't need to play like the tards in the adverts.

    PS4 Dual Camera

When we unveiled Orbis, an enigmatic device called “Dual Camera” was also listed within the info.

“Dual Camera” appears to be an evolutioned HD Eyetoy instead of a Kinect device, based on the features offered right now.

It contains a pair of wide-angle cameras. Each camera offers a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (720p).

Sound is processed by a 4 microphone array working at 48 Khz.

The device can perform some non gaming tasks such as:

    - Recognize the user and log in the system

    - Video chat

In the gaming field it supports head and hand tracking as new game inputs. Currently it’s not clear if this device will support body tracking in the future as Kinect but it’s almost sure that it will be bundled with every Orbis system.

Would microphones like this and Kinect 2.0 be a substitute for headsets ?

Try using Kinect like a wiimote, with your arm resting on your leg.

The kinect is hilarious. In kinect enabled games my mrs ends up switching weapons and using powers when she is in the same room and on the phone to her mum.

She was once complaining about work and kept setting off the force push thing in mass effect.

@SomaticSense But...but it was you who equated using Kinect for RTS with using a Wiimote for a long time! Are you saying they are the same, or not?

Actually wouldnt mind Sony doing a controller like this - looks a bit beefier than the Dualshock, would be interesting to see how they incorporated the track pad too.

It's difficult...the trackpad there in the middle means that you'd need to release grip of one hand to operate it, because it's too far away for any finger to touch while gripping, so you can't operate the pad and simultaneously any other button with the same hand. You could move the trackpad so it's under the thumb of one hand, but that would mean moving an existing part of the controller, and you'd be biasing the controller for either left or right handed people. Trackpad has to be in the middle, but there's just no optimal way to implement it.
