Thread for all things Nikon related. Started because I got me a new toy!

Just got me a Coolpix P300. Stuck a 32G Class 10 SD card as well.

No idea how to use it just yet, but looking forward to messing about with it. There are far to many 'important' events happening and I wanted a decent camera (which can do HD video as well) to capture the moments.

Went to Jessops to get it originally in the Trafford Centre. Said they had one in stock on the website. By that, they meant the display model. What a load of fucking shit. Girl in there said they had loads of complaints about it and they're in the process of sorting it out.

Not only that, she said they have a 3 year cover policy. I stopped her before she built up any steam.

Anyhow, ended up getting it from John Lewis instead. They've got a one year guarantee and if you register with Nikon within 30 days, you get a further year. So what the fuck was she trying to sell me?

Now I've finally got a semi-decent camera, I'm going to enjoy snapping again and eventually work my way up to some kind of SLR.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

    D800 officially announced

36MP as rumoured. There's also a D800E model with no anti-aliasing filter - in case 36 million lightly anti-aliased pixels ain't enough resolution for you :)

Am monitoring used D700 prices on ebay...

Crazy isn't it? And I thought the megapixel race was over...

Mind you, it does make me want a Nikon...either that or has made me realise that I am a sucker for new things and wont be able to resist upgrading the 5Dmark2 when the Mark3 comes out regardless of improvements!

Iím still totally content with my D700 tbh. Those extra pixels would mean nothing to me, and while I would like the option of video, Iím probably better off without it. Iíd only want to buy another whole set of lenses just for video.

Itís actually quite a relief not having any sense of desire for this. I must be growing.

I echo that actually! D7000 is enough for my needs.

With the coming Lightroom 4, I think studio photographers are drooling at the thought of the D800E, since you can tweak AA settings in post rather that on sensor level. This is the area that medium format digital cameras rule entirely today from my understanding.

    D600 announced

Full-frame, 24MP, aimed at enthusiasts rather than pros and therefore supposedly affordable... except its UK list price is about £100 less than you can get the vastly better-specced D800 for. Oops!

Seems bizarre but presumably the D800 is listed as less than rrp and the D600 will likely sell for less I should think? Still totally out of my budget.

Feels like Nikon have totally misjudged the gap they're trying to fill here.

You can get a second hand Canon 5D mk1 for around £500 now. There is no Nikon full frame that comes anywhere near that price. Even a fairly well used D700 will be at least twice that.

If the D600 comes down to £1500 it'll sell well. You can't really compare it to a 5D mk1 with 7-year-old technology.

I'm not comparing the tech. I'm comparing the prices.

Seems to me the D600 has to be cheaper than a D700.

The 5D mk1 is still a great camera. I would like better ISO performance but in all other aspects it leaves very little to be desired.

+1 on the D7000 and love mine.

    Went up through a D70, D200 and now D7000.

Prices and tech are inextricably linked though. You can't expect a camera with 2012 tech to cost anything like what a 7 year old camera costs second hand.

That said I do think it's way overpriced at the moment, as my initial post made clear.

I expect 2nd hand D700 prices will come down once the D600's street price does.

Of course price and tech are linked, but you position something by price point. You can't release a camera aimed at "enthusiasts" that costs more than pro level cameras that do roughly the same thing, or more. The fact that they're priced it above their own D700 is just weird.

You can incidentally still buy a brand new 5D mk1 for around £900, and actually a brand new 5D mkII for about £1,500.

Just spotted the D600 announcement. I really should stop looking at these new cameras and just buy a D90. It would blow my old D70 out of the water, and to be honest I don't like these new D7000-style bodies. Everything feels too cramped.

As for the pricing, it seems to me that anything quality is more expensive these days. I'm not sure you can compare it to the D700, as it seems from looking at camerapricebuster that supplies of the D700 are very close to running out. But yes, they have got a cheek charging that for that old AF system.

Don't really understand that, I had a D90 then a D7000 and the ergonomics were no more cramped - just much improved.

The issue with used Nikon prices is of course related to them taking so long to release anything full frame. D3 was what, 3 years after the 5D1?

I think the D600 just sits in an awkward spot for the money. Anyone who can afford (or justify) sinking that kind if money into a camera will go the extra for a D800. The second hand market is flooded with D700s as people upgrade and so the selling point of the camera right now isn't clear.

I reckon it will soon be about £1500-£1600 when it will make more sense.

I'm intending to sell my D90 for lack of use. Love it to bits, took some amazing photos (by my standards). However if I use anything it's the GF1 because it's easier to have out and ready.

Let me know how much you're looking for it you do. As I said above, I'm in the market for a D90.

Woudn't a new D5100 make more sense? It has the D7000 sensor.

True, but it's missing a screw thread autofocus, which knocks out two thirds of my lens collection, and the viewfinder is much worse on the D5100 on the D90 which has a lovely glass pentaprism. The crappy viewfinder is the thing that annoys me most about my D70.

@mal Actually been sorting through my bag and taking photos today.

    Nikon D90 & 18-105 VR Kit

Two extra batteries, one Nikon and one Inov8

    Two 16gb SD Cards

    MBD80 Grip

    AH-4 Hand Strap

A neck strap also, cant remember if it came with the camera or not

Nikkor 50mm 1.8D Lens (Hoya UV Filter on since purchase)

Tamron 18-270mm 3.5-6.3 DII VC (Hoya UV or Polarised Filters on since purchase)

    Nikkon VAE padded bag

Everything in excellent condition with all the boxes, manuals etc. One mark on the LCD where something got between the protector and the screen in transit, not really visible when the camera is displaying an image & some water damage to the manual.

I've been quoted £750-950 from a potential buyer for the lot on the phone depending on condition. Looking on ebay I could probably get £825ish if everything sold at the average prices. Been offered £700 trade-in by SRS Microsystems in Watford.

[edit]Updated. Let me know if you're interested as I'll be coming down to London for the Eurogamer Expo and hope to arrange a buyer by then.

Sounds good. Unfortunately I don't need a lot of that kit; I already have the 50mm f1.8 (with a Hoya UV filter on it, no less), and I'm not particularly interested in slow zooms. The hand strap and vertical grip are interesting to me, but it all depends whether you're willing to split it up or not. Looking at Amazon I can buy a new D90, AH-4 and MB-D80 for about 580 quid.

    Good day photography enthusiasts!

I have no interest in photography whatsoever, however, Mrs USW has expressed an interest in it before.

Today, i have ordered her THIS camera as her christmas gift.

Please confirm it is a good purchase or i will shit in my trousers.

    Thank you.
