The motorway speed limit is being raised to 80mph!

    Thought there'd already be a thread about this but I can't find one, so apologies if I've missed it.

    So transport secretary Philip Hammond has announced that they're raising the speed limit on motorways to 80mph (probably from 2013).

    I can't see it making that much difference to be honest, as almost everyone seems to do either 60 or 90 anyway. But the current speed limit was set in 1965 and is way outdated. Cars are safer nowadays, for one thing.

    Wondered what you lot thought of it all.

    Great, my 150mph car is really excited that i'll only ever be able to break the speed limit by 70mph, not 80mph.

    Not that I do more than 60mph to save fuel

    Doing 70mph in a sixties car must have been pretty terrifying.

    Used to hit 90 or 100 in my Fiat Panda. The thing shook uncontrollable and was so loud that you couldn't hear the person next to you.

    I do about 80mph now.

    I remember in my old fiesta it would be fine until about 65 where it would start shaking. Had then keep pushing past 70 where it would get worse and worse until about 75/80+ where it would then be completely smooth. Made no sense whatever, but was great fun and felt like an accomplishment every time.

    I was doing 80 today. Pretty much the standard speed I go between work and back.

    That would be your wheel alignment / tracking being out and makes perfect sense. Didn't you think about getting someone to take a look at it?

    With regards to the speed limit, good stuff. I can now do 80 and not feel guilty about it, though I wonder if there will be a massive advertising campaign to inform everyone, otherwise you'll get lots of "dangerous" drivers still sticking well below the 70 mark.

    Some one did look at it. They said it was a death trap and not worth fixing. Was my first and last car. R.I.P. :(

    I wonder if the 30mph over the speed limit = instaban thing will still apply. Like now, 100mph on a motorway is a ban - will that go up as well so in theory you could be doing 110mph before getting banned, and 100mph would just be points?

    Anyway it's not speed that's the issue on a motorway. It's the fact that fifty percent of drivers don't understand stopping distance.

    What it would need though, is much more rigorous enforcement of the new limit. Of course I imagine by then the coalition will have abolished traffic police as the middle/upper classes don't like being told off by them.

    I'm a tight fuck, so I won't be driving faster than 70mph anyway. Driving at 80 uses a shitload more fuel than driving at 70.

    I drive 18 miles of motorway each way to work and home. I can never do 70, as the fucking retarded 'variable speed limit' is never variable, it's just stuck at 60mph for the whole stretch where they have speed cameras and then 70 for the 2 miles they don't.

    There is a great documentary on BBC4 about the birth of motorways in the UK, which has all the ancient cars speeding up and down, and dying.
