This is one of those games that I remember quite fondly, but would probably suck if they made a version today.

Yeah might head to Ebay and pick 'em up. What's the difference between the DOS versions and the win95 versions meme? It is just the operating systems they are for or will I miss anything going for the easier to get working DOS versions?
    Get the dos versions.

The Win95 versions use the XvsT engine, so look a bit prettier, but from what I remember lack iMuse, thus destroying a good portion of the immersion. But are also pretty damn fiddly to get working on modern PCs. So yeah, aim for the originals if possible.

Cheers Crispy and meme I think I might do that today!

Might look into getting Alliance to work though, liked that one and would like replaying that to.

It could be a tie-in to his Red Tails movie.

Why would space shooter experience be a plus for a WWII game though?

I can't wait for this to end up being a Kinect Episode One Jar Jar Binks game where you run around the living room flapping your arms like a (edit:)bird.

    :)

Hmm, I doubt it will be PC exclusive. I hope the simulation side isn't completely removed. I want to flick switches, manage shield powers and all that other stuff.

Yeah in the event it is X-Wing I'm pondering this to, there is no way the flight sim style would work on console but would they release on PC only?

PC exclusives can sell and they do PC only MMOs already, obviously X-wing/TIE fighter is a big hitting series to so it's not completely out of the question and the job ad does say "flight sim experience a plus".

If it is console to though that would drastically alter the control, it would be more colony wars than X-Wing :(

I'm not sure why the flight-stick controls of X-Wing couldn't be mapped to a modern controller. Getting the travel and deadzones would be tricky but I think it could be done.

I'd even go for another Rogue Squadron Gamecube type game. They were awesome.

I'm waiting for Lutz to post his 'all X-Wing controls mapped to the 360 pad' scheme again.

Yeah but you had flight, power, shields, targeting, communications etc. Even with a flight stick you still needed the keyboard if I remember correctly. surely all of that would not be possible on a pad, 360 pad has what 10 buttons including the stick buttons, 5 more if you include the D-pad and the back button (start would obviously be needed to pause the game). 15 buttons wouldn't do it without streamlining the game.

Thinking about it, other than a ridiculous Saitek controller I got to review I don't think I ever owned a flight stick with more buttons than a 360 controller.

*edit - I'm not sure there are any controls needed for flying and fighting that you'd need to drop; a lot of them could be stuck in a Start button menu, especially if radial menus were used for things like comms.

No doubt it would be dumbed down though, even if not necessary.

Targeting alone had about 3 essential buttons, and that's not including subsystem targeting. Even with a joystick you had to use the keyboard.

Funnily enough I just found that to, bloody loads of keys!! :)

RodHull on the front page story reckons he played fine with an 8 button flight stick so if you forget some of the commands it seems possible....as long as they don't gimp the "proper" PC version! :)

Heh yeah, LA definitely didn't ignore the sim side of space flight sim :)

I wouldn't mind of they were to simplify it somewhat, I remember hardly ever using about half of the available controls. They often felt a bit too circumstantial.

Moreover, what made XWvsTF fun was chasing other vessels. Trying to match speed and direction while angling to ensure the shots intersect with the target's trajectory and at the same time avoiding being hit by those following me, that's what made the game exciting. I can still see that working with simpler controls.

If it's going to be a controller-first game however, hmm. I don't see radial menus working all too well for this sort of game so it'll no doubt have to be severely "streamlined" then :/

Great game, liked the balance of energies in it. Was my first online game I think, back in 1996 or 1997?

Ooooh..... Kinect could allow virtual button pushing. As could a chatpad. I expect that a chatpad is as banned as a keyboard for gameplay.

Think a pc only relase would work. Something along the lines of a budget title so say 20 for the game and a reasonable campaign and online. Heavily integrate steam into it and get it pimped on steam.
