After the expected Vita remake, the unexpected fighting game?!

    Pictures

    News

The big shocker from this week's Famitsu is Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka, an HD fighting game based of Persona 4. A few additional details have surfaced since word of the game first broke earlier in the day.

As detailed earlier (see this story), The Ultimate in Mayonaka is being developed by the BlazBlue staff at Arc System Works. But the Persona team appears to be intimately involved.

Speaking with Famitsu, the game's producer, Arc's Toshimichi Mori, said that he was shocked when Atlus came to them with the offer to work on the title. The BlazBlue team includes many fans of the Persona series, so their motivation for the project was very high, he said.

The Persona team didn't want to just have the BlazBlue team develop the game for them. Instead, they wanted the game to be a joint development project. According to Mori, game's director Takumi Iguchiya (whom you'll recognize as the lead programmer on the BlazBlue series) is working closely with the Persona team.

In addition to the commentary Mori, we have a list of modes that appears in Famitsu:

Arcade Mode: Face off against CPU opponents while following the story
Story Mode: Delve deeper into the arcade mode's story. This will be exclusive to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game.
Score Attack Mode: Face off against CPU opponents to get the high score
VS Mode: Face off against a CPU or human opponent
Online Battle: Face off against players throughout the world in online combat (I imagine that can be taken as confirmation of an international release...)

The game will include original stories for all its included characters, which come from both Persona 4 and Persona 3. The overarching story is set two months after the events of Persona 4. The characters appear on a fighting program called "P-1 Grand Prix."

The Ultimate in Mayonaka will be released first to arcades in Spring 2012. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will follow in the summer.

Wow! Very unexpected. Never played BazBlue but heard it got a lot of love. If this has a nice deep story to it I will probably snap it up.

How patches are ruining the future of gaming My thoughts.

Crazy, crazy news, but it would be hard for this to be anything less than decent.

"Mayonaka" - same spelling mistake that's on the NeoGAF thread!

Arc are currently in my bad books for announcing yet another marginal upgrade release for BlazBlue, and I'm not too sure about the sprites I've seen so far, but there is no reason to believe that this will end up like Sengoku Basara Cross. More importantly, with both Daisuke Ishiwatari and Shoji Meguro available, the music has no chance of being anything less than amazing.

Also, Unreliable Anoop Gantayat strikes again - it's "The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena". I'm pretty sure he got up and down mixed up at some point yesterday.

edit: to make it clear, though, I'd still take the increasingly unreliable and pervy Gantayat a million times before I would even consider crediting Brian Ashcraft with anything.

I got an email from Atlus about this last night.

It seems that the name is Persona 4 Arena in the west, and there's a website placeholder for it now: http://www.atlus.com/p4arena/

    No new information though.

Well, the US release has been confirmed for the Summer, around the same time as the JP release.

I've never owned an arcade stick before but I've started looking at them online now the US version of P4 Arena is less than two weeks away.

If you've never owned one before, either borrow one off a friend or get a cheap one (the WWE Allstars one was being sold off cheap and can be easily modified with Japanese parts).

Yup, good stick by all accounts

And to add some game-related info to the surprisingly dead-looking thread, the story mode ia apparently ~40 hours long, and a continuation of P4, rather than a retelling.

Also, Elizabeth didn't want anyone to upload footage of the story mode before the game's official release.

They have a PS3 version, too, so I need to decide which version of the game to get first.

Yep, that's a good stick with good parts and (IMO) better button positioning.

If you're considering versions, note that the 360 version is having trouble with lag online and that it is generally easier to mod a 360 stick to be PS3 compatible than the other way around.

edit: 360 sticks play nicer with PC games, too, so if you're considering breaking it in on MAME or the PC version of SSF4AE then 360 is the way to go.

PC support would be a nice bonus if I got the 360 version. And maybe it would improve my scores on Ikaruga, too. But I bet the PS3 stick would be good for Dyad...

The lag issue with P4A is the most important thing though, so we'll see how that shakes out. Stick or not, I'm sure I'll suck pretty bad for a while/forever, but the huge story mode being a continuation of the P4 storyline means I have to get it.

That's not to say the PS3 stick outright won't work, it's just that a lot of modern games don't bother putting in the universal DirectInput option for input, relying on XInput (the Xbox API) for controllers as it's easier to implement.

You can get PS3 stuff working on PC as a virtual 360 controller, but it's a bit of a faff.

I just checked on Amazon and the price for PS3 version went up by 9! seems like they want to cash in now that we can't import due to region lock...

Atlus do say that they know about the lag situation on the 360 and are working on it, so I would be surprised to not see it fixed soon since there are no issues with the PS3 version.

When I checked Amazon this morning they were out of the PS3 Hori SCV stick, and only had two of the 360 version left. So I went ahead and bought it. I Also ordered three Momiji dolls for my wife that I hope will arrive at the same time as my hundred dollar joystick.

Apparently the release date has been pushed back until September 7th in Europe. Also, is it too early to find about pre-order bonus goodies or does anyone know anything?

They asked people what they would like in a special edition on their Facebook page but I don't think there's been anything more than that yet. I'm always happy to get more Persona goodies so fingers crossed.

@santashi A art book like the one with Blazblue would be nice. Actually picked up the Persona 3 design works a while back so an art book may be tied up with the publisher.

Really looking forward to this at the end of the month.

Yeah, the Blazblue artbooks were pretty good. I'd be happy whether they went with poster images or character designs (like Arcana Heart 3 or Ghostlight's special editions for the two P3 releases). :) A (mini?)soundtrack would probably be the easiest preorder bonus/SE to do I guess so that's probably the most likely.

Have you seen the Teddy Nendoroid? Obviously couldn't be a bonus unless they massively delay the game's release but it's pretty neat.

Did you ever watch the Blazblue tutorial DVD? I don't think I ever even took it out of the box but it might have helped.

@santashi Ha that nendoroid is pretty neat.

The tutorial dvd was great for Blazblue.I used Arakune a lot so it showed me some good techniques. Just had some nice hints for each character but the russian narrating for Iron tager was hilarious.

Ah, cool. Sounds worthwhile, anyway. I always seemed to perform best with Arakune but preferred using Jin... Arakune is pretty damn creepy at times.
