I eventually beat him using loads of diamond shields, which in hindsight was a massive waste and I should have just waited to establish stronger social links and level up a little more.

Absolutely loving this needless to say. So much depth and strategy.

I'm able to chip away a bit at him using main guy and Chie, with Yosuke and Yukiko as healers. Then BAM Yukiko's dead in one hit, and thus starts the downfall towards ultimate failure via the cycle of endless revives.

It's typical JRPG end-boss level of difficulty. And it's still early game! Completely nuts.

About to start playing this - already confused with all the difficulty levels. I want a bit of a challenge, not much - how hard is normal? I don't want to be constantly replaying sections, but i do want a bit of threat. How does it scale?

@ubergine Wait until you get a persona that is immune to physical attacks. I couldn't beat him without one. He becomes a walkover at that point as that's his only damage type.

    For the emperor!

@ZuluHero If you've played a few turn based JRPGs just go with normal, you'll be fine. The game actually starts out quite hard then gets easier with more social links!

    For the emperor!

Ahh thanks for the reply - i have completed all the final fantasies 6 through 12. And Wild Arms. But this is some time ago as you can tell.

I don't have the patience these days! :)

Hmm, the combat gets very easy very quickly. Have saved Naoto and waiting for the next Midnight Channel, but in the meantime I'm around level 65 and virtually every fight is over without the enemy getting a chance to move, critical hits and support moves all over the place! Just did Naoto's extra boss without any trouble.

Is there any challenge left, or should I start to create some myself by rotating some weak members into the team? Chie is a one woman kung fu machine!

... Just thought about what I wrote - 60 hours is 'very quickly' right?!

How many dungeons are there in this? I've been playing for 40 hours but have only just finished the third one. From the sound of it I've still got a fair way to go?

This might just be my favorite PSVita game. IDK it's a toss up between this and Uncharted: Golden Abyss

@Nazo The latter half of the game is thicker and faster, so don't worry about it, it's your normal 60 hour jrpg.

    /Looks at 98 hour original save file. ..... -_-

I've taken a plump and grabbed this from amazon for 25. It looks really interesting and whilst I'm not a big fan of JRPG it seemed to be giving off an almost Shenmue vibe from the videos I watched. If it doesn't click with me at the very least I can chuck it on ebay after a try.

Everyone has said how good it is so I hope I like it.

It's great. One of my favourite RPGs and happily rather different than most.

It looked different to most things I've played to be honest. It also looks bonkers. In a good way :)

    Finished :(

Shame it lacks balance towards the end. For the last 3 or 4 dungeons I was flying through almost every battle - the final dungeon in particular just throws EXP at you (particularly thanks to the really annoying backtracking midway) , so ended with everyone at mid 80s levels. Rise's support moves make a huge difference too. I was even caning Glorious Hands!

The final boss barely scratched the team - (tactics spoiler) just had Yukiko casting Saviour every so often, Teddy casting buffs, and Chie and I destroying it with God Hand.

About 80 hours to get here. Now for New Game run ;)

@Trowel Out of curiosity, what difficulty did you play it on? I played it on Easy and had trouble with the Hollow Forrest dungeon.

Played through on normal. I went back and did the extra boss after every dungeon, and that seemed to be more than enough grinding. Also restricted my party to those with the highest social links as much as possible - once Chie and Yukiko are maxed out it gets much easier.

Soooo this is a weird one isn't it.
I started earlier this week and so far it's been a bit like reading a comic rather than playing a game. I think my save says I'm almost 2 hours in and from that I've actually played about 10 mins of actual game. Does it continue in this way, is it more comic than game or just a very long introduction?

Not that I'm bothered (at the moment) the story is interesting and it's all very unlike anything I've experienced which is why I bought it in the first place.

Um... I think it goes through stages where you do different things, so you may have hours of non stop action followed by talking for hours.

Terrible design... yet somehow is incredibly compelling and brilliant. It is the only game I have ever played where I actually am emotionally invested in the stories and relationships as opposed to being a passive observer.

It's bonkers design so far, but it must be compelling because I think I'd have switched off already - it's been that lacking in actual gaming!
Just had my first battle with a shadow. More of this please. I confess to having it on easy as I'm very new to the genre.

Don't worry there's LOOOOADS of actual 'playing' in it. There's times where it seems the storyline just takes over, but it's all good! Think the opening is pretty long before you get full control.

I'd say the game doesn't start proper till Yukiko's dungeon about 3-4 hours in. But seeing as it's at least a 60 hour game, those first few hours will seem like nothing.

You may regret that later as the game has a strange difficulty curve and the last few dungeons can become a bit of a walkover. I don't know about the forest one I didn't get that.

Also that's one of my main gripes, how easy it is to cut off big chunks of the game. The ending being a great example.
You have a series of questions you have to answer and if you get any wrong then that's it, incredibly unsatisfying ending and lose about 15% of the game. Which happened to me so I google it and find out what to put and spoil the actual ending in the process :/
Yes I could have kept reloading and trying different combinations but that's very tedious, it would have been better if the right answers made sense.

Like binky, I've only just started this recently. It's certainly a slow starter but, five hours in, I'm enjoying it a lot (and much more than some RPGs in the past few years).

Only just starting to get my mind around the basics, let alone all the information in the Velvet Room about Personas, skills, links and whatnot. I'm surprised by the amount of stuff there is to do! Can't wait to get back to this... only a few more hours til lunch!

Give it til the 2nd dungeon gents, then you'll really be in the swing of everything.

4th playthrough now, still haven't managed the Legend of Inaba trophy :-(

Just don't try and romance two girls at the same time. There was a moment at the end where I felt like a right heel :(
