Registered 5 years ago@quadfather - Haha I know what you mean, I'm the same. I wish I could remember what was there so I could tell you if it was worth it. I do remember a secret button near the beginning of the area down a dead end, and a helmet/crown sort of thing that gave strength or attack power or something hidden in some debris on the floor. -

Registered 3 years ago@Kuronos23 - Dammit! I'm going to have to (attempt) to get that now!
Also, there's a page on the legend of grimrock official site in the forum that tells you what level has what items in it. I'm only looking on levels that I've already done, but it looks like I've missed a shitload!

Registered 5 years agoYeah I'm sure I missed loads too. In fact if you look in statistics there's one that says "Treasures - 0/7", or at least it does on mine since apparently I missed every single one.
I got all the iron doors open though!
Will definitely have to have another playthrough at some point. -

Registered 3 years agoYeah, I got the iron doors open up to where I am (8), and I've been keeping an eye on the statistics for the amount of treasures, but there's a different amount for each level, and mine just says, "You have X out of 72", so I don't know where I've missed stuff. I presume that 72 figure is all the secrets throughout all the levels.
Missed the bloody plate armour on level 4/5 too. Fuck! Forgot about thatpsn = quaddy456

I take it you've all seen the review on the front page today?
Haven't had any time to play the last few days, must make an hour or two tonight.
All the talk of extra hotkeys has made me think back to the other day. Someone (can't remember who, sorry!) was describing a spell recipe by comparing the rune map to positions on the numeric keypad. How great would it be if you could 'dial' spells using the number pad, rather than having to click on those diddy little icons in the heat of battle? Very great, that's how great. Yes.

Yeah, my favourite so far.
I haven't come across these Ice Lizards though, are you sure they're on level 8? Or maybe I've got confused - I'm in the Hall of The Dis-assembler or some such at the moment. I was doing pretty well at it last night after a slightly ropey start, worked my way through the conduit slaughtering all in my path - and then got spit roasted between a big fucker on one side and a hot one on the other.
Had I saved recently? Of course not
Left it for the night. -

Registered 6 years agoStarted level 5 tonight and it's a little disappointing so far. Just opened the iron gate so still got a bit to go in the level but its the dullest floor so far -

Registered 6 years ago@quadfather I like the change in setting it just seems a bit dull after 4 however it has given me loot so I shouldn't complain -

Registered 9 years agoI found a compass ages ago. Not sure what it does. What does it do?
I tried to check the manual but I can't find it on steam.

Registered 5 years agoThe manual is in the steam install folder. I'm pretty sure the compass is for mapping if you're playing it 'old school'. -
Surprisingly for a compass, it points to the North!

Guess it's helpful for the hardcore crowd that draws their own maps. -

Registered 9 years agoOh, so something to bin then.
I got all excited when I found it. Probably because the last compass I found in a dungeon was probably in a Zelda game and there they're really useful. So I was expecting it to sort of "do" something.

Registered 3 years agoJudging by the current level design I've seen, I wouldn't throw it away. There's probably a secret level that only opens with the compass in your hand

Registered 9 years agoAh that's a good point. I carried about a skull for ages and that didn't do much. Then I saw a scribble on the wall asking for a sacrifice. So I thought maybe that's what it was for.
Kinda cool that it worked! Although I suspect putting any object there would have worked. -

Registered 5 years agoAs far as I know, skulls are just for Minotaurs with the headhunter perk (increases attack power). -

Registered 9 years agoOh ... I've been putting points in my rogue's assassination skill tree. I now have "backstab" capability. Double damage if I stab an enemy from behind .. yaaay!
Except I now realise that the chances of using it are pretty fucking slim. I never get behind an enemy. You get near them they attack. Full frontal style. :-/
Does stabbing at them from the side count? That's doable. Getting behind one seems near impossible. -
I think "flanking" does more damage or improves your hit chances, but for backstabbing you actually need to get behind. I agree that that's pretty difficult - attacking from the side works fine though, 90% of my attacks aren't frontal!

Registered 3 years agoMy side attacks have critical chances, but not backstab. But slower enemies (Undead) are easy to backstab. Spiders are almost impossible.
Unless you freeze them first

Registered 9 years agoIf I end up fighting one of them skeletal soldiers (or more often, 4), there's no way I can get behind them for a backstab. The come at you, you get to their side and move past them and before you can move behind them they've turned to catch up with you, the best you can hope for is the flank.
That said, I have started putting points in ice magic, so hopefully in time I can freeze + backstab I guess. Although by the time I shuffle around the enemy for a backstab I can probably land a blow with each of my party members, so again not much point.
Seems poorly thought out this backstabbing malarky. -

Registered 3 years agoI dunno, I tend to get a fair few hits in. I'm normally positioned 90 degree's away from any mob though, so I only have to wait till they move and then I only have 2 key presses and I'm behind them - I can get backstabs about 50% of the time with this method on most mobspsn = quaddy456

If the enemy moves from a diagonal to the square in front of you:
Sidestep, forward, turn to face their rear
If the enemy moves from a diagonal to the square beside you:
Forward, turn, forward, turn to face their rear
Now, if Grimrock supported different facings, for your party members (think that was Knightmare, wasn't it?), then you could do it in two key presses but only if they were on the right side of the party for the rogue to strike. -
Backstabbing also works great with the huge trolls when they do their charge attack.
