    http://www.knowyourmobile.com/mobile-games/mobilegamefeatures/1020906/where_now_for_the_sony_ericsson_xperia_play.html

Found the above article as I was thinking about getting a new phone and as I'm in the market for a PSP or 3DS I figured, kill two birds with one stone.

    Well, perhaps not.

I was never quite sure how the Xperia Play worked in terms of it being PlayStation and Android. I've yet to see any game reviews on Eurogamer. It seems the phone merely relies upon Android releases being optimized for its particular control scheme. From what I can see there's no first-party support or important exclusives.

Bizarrely it doesn't connect to PSN so downloading PSone classics and PSP minis is not possible!

Overall it's a pretty confusing product that doesn't really fit into either camp; it's not a particularly capable Android smartphone, and it offers no advantages over its competitors in mobile gaming other than its control scheme.

Is it already on its way out?

Didn't they just drop the price? Does that answer your question?

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

One thing for which the Xperia should be great is Android's PSX emulator (as well as the SNES, GBA etc).

"Since the Xperia Play launched, we’ve seen only a handful of 32-bit PlayStation releases and the vast majority of those are games which appeared very early on in the format’s lifespan. We’ve had no Ridge Racer, no Gran Turismo, no Final Fantasy VII and no Castlevania: Symphony of the Night."

I don't know what the article is talking about, there's an Android PSX emulator and people can play FFVII on their Samsung Galaxies! Or am I missing something? That site really needs to know its mobiles. :/

Retroid has one ane AFAIK likes it a lot, but then he's a big emulation fan. All I know is that even though it's smelly Android it has an official Minecraft game available and therefore I want one :-)

is the emulator legal and available through the android store? sounds like a great alternative - i assume if it's psx then it would be a sony product.

I got an Android two days ago, there's a PSX emulator, a SNES emulator, a NES emulator and a GBA emulator that I've seen. I haven't been looking, though - I don't have an Xperia and don't want to faff around with touchscreen-controlled emulated games until I'm bored with the stuff designed for a touchscreen.

Discovered Game Dev Story this morning. Bam. Seven hours gone.

All they needed to do was stick a 3G chip into a psp go.

It is a weird one, though. People just wanted a playstation phone. Sony make phones. Sony make the playstation. How hard is it to mash the two together?

Instead they release something with a stupid name and vaguely defined capabilities into a world where everyone thinks £1.09 is too much for a mobile game.

IIRC Xperia is not even as powerful as a PSP?

Considering getting one of these primarily for emulators. How well do the emulators do on the Xperia Play? Do the control buttons on the screen disappear now that they are not needed etc etc, hows the speed?

    Get bent.

a quick google search suggests it has a superior cpu, gpu and ram to that of the psp, also the screen is a much greater resolution and able to display more colours. however, as it has an operating system and various mobile phone related things to run in the background, the relative power is uncertain and difficult to compare.

does android require you to create a store account in the same way that itunes does? does that mean you can only use applications that have passed certification and are readily available in the android market?

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but Hotukdeals have uncovered a fairly decent deal (who'd have thunk it?) for the Xperia.

    £199.99 delivered from Expansys.

I've never used these guys before - and you'll have to wait until early October for 'new stock' to arrive - but still, possibly worth a punt?

I couldn't care less about iPhones / Galaxies (or whatever the hell they're called) etc, but I'm rather tempted by this phone - if only for the emulation goodness.

Google account is required to access the Market but Android handsets can also install software via an application's .apk file - which can be transferred or downloaded to internal or external memory - so even if something is not on the Android app store it can still be used. The Market can be ignored completely if you choose to do so, hence why Android tablets prior to Honeycomb just about got away with having no (official) Market access.

I put in an order, but I have plenty of time to cancel - no 'new stock' until early October, apparently.

Is the phone itself actually any good? Do we have any Xperia owner who'd like to offer their views?

It's got one of the better single core processors and they're working on a Cyanogen port for it. If you don't have an Android phone already, it's excellent value if you want to head in.

    Thanks, Uiruki.

I have an ancient mobile phone (ancient in that it's probably around 5 years old).

I hate mobile phones - I never carry one with me, but it's great as an alarm clock.

It's the 'emulator' side of things that appeals to me, but then I'm thinking that I could buy a hacked PSP for a quarter of the price. Hmm.

You posted that link and I was immediately tempted, went through the same thinking process as well ( still using a k800i ).

My conclusion was that the single CPU aspect meant it would be outdated within another year. Pretty damn tempting, just can't justify it when I already have a hacked PSP.

It's a decent enough handset, especially for £200, if you are buying it specifically for mobile gaming, just buy a psp....

It's fairly quick and responsive once it's been updated and the like, it's not the quickest of handsets out the box...

    Now available for £155 delivered.

Is it possible to get some of the slightly more obscure PS1 games to run on this phone - Ico, Vib Ribbon, Alundra etc?

FYI, they extracted the official PSX emulator from the bundled Crash Bandicoot, which is optimised specifically for the Xperia Play. So best to look for that one rather than the Android Marketplace emulator.

Hah, Jaysus - it seems like so long ago that I was convinced that Ico was PS1 and that Colossus was its PS2 sequel.

Let us not forget that it was ALMOST a PS1 release. :)

@ Load_2.0 - Hotukdeals told me - £154.99 from a site called Chitter Chatter (no, I've never heard of them either). Argos were also selling it for around £165.00, but it's out of stock across the whole country at the mo.

I read on Joystiq that Sony are going to buy out Erricsson so that they fully own their mobile branch.

Could be an indication of a more stable and consistent phone offering. Suite added as standard to all Sony Android products etc.

This sudden attempt to clear all their stock combined with the Erricsson buyout makes me hopeful that there will be a more powerful version coming round the corner.

If something could deliver GC / Wii emulation with usable controls I'll buckle pretty quickly.

I want to move to Android away from iPhone.

If they can deliver PSP games and maybe PS2 ones, that would be awesome.
