Noticed at least a few of us play this, and I could do with a little motivation. Here's the current leaderboard according to my friends list (Dwarven moderation + permadeath, the default setting). Just add your (future) scores if you want, obviously also if you're not on that list. :)

    #1Gremmi
    13,720 Global rank: #8444

    #2UncleLou
    3,048 Global rank: #15855

    #3speedofthepuma
    328 Global rank: #22620

    #4Khanivor
    328 Global rank: #22622

    #5Tiger_Walts

3664 is my highest registered score thusfar.

I'm still alive in my latest game however and I've explored twice or even three times as much as in that high score game, so I expect my personal best to go up by quite a bit :)

Saying that, I've noticed the game becomes substantially easier once you manage to acquire a good amount of items. Starting out is definitely the hardest part as far as I'm concerned.
However, I'll most likely die in some horrible fashion in my latest game now I've made that remark :p

As with all roguelikes, the key to doing well is crafting your character well. My highest scores were made with pure combat characters, I honestly think magic needs a bit of tweaking in the game. Though my one main piece of advice would be to pick the Indiana Jones perk, it allows you to disarm all traps, which nets you just as much XP as combat.

Aye, I have the same experience. Half of the problem is the doors mechanic: opening one often implies suddenly being toe to toe with two-three monsters. As a squishy magic user that usually doesn't end well.

Note that Archeology isn't actually needed for the bulk of the traps; only a certain percentage of them cannot be disarmed without the skill. Traps are also just as efficient against monsters as against yourself, so not disarming them all nets you free kills from roaming baddies.

Not seen this before and I'm a sucker for a good roguelike. Any good? Seems it's suffering from basic balancing issues.

Noticed this on steam the other day but wasn't sure if it was worth a purchase considering these games don't get reviewed

    Buy then?

Did you really have to post that score of mine? :/

It was my only Dwarven Moderation run that I did quite early. Poor Barry Trotter, may he rest in pieces. Been playing easy mode as a sort of fact-finding exercise. Easy is very easy but it also makes you complacent so that when you run into an animal zoo, you do everything all wrong and kill yourself by accident. The most dangerous creature in the dungeon is yourself.

It's...okay. As a roguelike it's pretty much roguelight. The one thing that saves it for the proper roguelike players is the humour. But yeah, definitely unbalanced, but should be fixed with patching.

Won't mention the graphics as any true roguer shouldn't be worried about that. :D

You pick seven skills at the beginning from a whole list, you can make whatever type of character you want - it will never be balanced for all possible class combinations. Part of the fun here is finding a skill combination that works for you.

I'll consider giving it a whirl, I've still got a huge backlog of games vying for attention.

Arses. Got levelled up to 6 or so, then got caught in a Monster Zoo. Annoying that you can get stuck on stairs and hemmed in by mobs so you can't move at all.

Not sure how the score is calculated either. Despite being a higher level, with more zorkmids, more area explored and a lot more enemies killed, my overall score was still some 4,000 off my best. Maybe the latest patch changed it though.

28,988 - #5125 : Got spammed by casters when I found a zoo. It was my own fault for not stopping at a safer place. I was one-shotting about half the time, too. Forged an Fine Steel Sword and got another cool sword from a box of evil.

Oh well, you live, you die, you learn. Top tip, don't put a Lutefisk box inside a Lutefisk box if you're low on health. You get an achievement for it though.

And just as predicted: I ran into a monster zoo on dungeon level 3 and was ripped to shreds. Tried to make an escape and funnel them into a narrow passage as I did with the level 2 zoo but it was too close to the start of the level :(

I did obliterate my personal best score though with a staggering 32648 points :D

By the by: where can I see my ranking? The high score list only seems to tells me my score, unless I'm completely blind.
Edit: never mind, hadn't looked at my Steam stats yet. That score apparently nets me rank #5017

Blehh, was absolutely aceing a playthrough when I got killed by making several stupid mistakes in a row, deciding to enter combat with only 7 points of health thinking I might scrape through a kill.

Have changed my mind about magic - it's decent once you level up, it's just utter shit in the beginning, so subsequently you end up dying a lot more until you get up to level 4ish or so. Had the Norse and Aura buffs with a mighty sword, was doing around 30 points of damage per hit, and had a friendly dragon following me around too. One-shotting everything and anything, absolutely massacred a zoo, then stumbled over several traps in a row without paying attention and got slayed by a rogue AI who managed to dodge my attack. BOO.

I was just watching this on the Jogscat. I'm tempted to buy it but, that would depend on there being an OS X version of the game, anyone know if there is one?
  • Deleted user 22 July 2011 23:55:56
Have you tried looking on the game's homepage to see if there is?

Argh, just fucked up and died on level 10. Got 8th place on easy permadeath though, 751k points. Build posted under spoiler tag for anyone interested:

Staves, Artful Dodger, Astrology, Promethean Magic, Blood Mage, Perception and Alchemy

@coda: The Steam site lists both pc and osx requirements, so I assume it's for both.

There are some teleportation skills in some of the magic disciplines, also there's Knight's Leap in the Dodging skill.
