So it's looking extremely likely Cesc will be leaving this summer, which means we'll have to appoint a new captain.

Who do you think we should choose? And for what reason?

RvP or Vermalaen. Both have balls. Both can be considered 'senior' team members.

Captains should always be a CB IMHO.

On that basis, assuming he's fit, the Verminator would be my choice.

RVP is great but strikers aren't the best captains.

Vermaelen for me. RvP is too temperamentally unstable?

    I'd make Jack vice-captain.

RvP. Always shows passion on the pitch.

I'd lay money on RvP - Wenger sees it as a reward, not a responsibility. (I'm not sure he is correct about this - I have this feeling (expressed on here before) that things would be very different now if he'd made Sol captain back-when instead of TH.)

RvP will be given it to make him stay. He'll stay for another year, moan and look grumpy and then be sold to Barcelona next year.

    Deja Vu.

So it seems like Vermaelen or Van Persie are the preferred candidates.

I'm going to be abit left field here and suggest another candidate - Bacary Sagna.

Vermaelen for me hasn't been at the club long enough to be worthy of the captaincy in my honest opinion, and I think Van Persie like Henry and Gallas before him would just be weighed down by it. When he's been doing so well recently, why add undue pressure on him?

Sagna on the other hand ticks the most boxes for me:

    - Humble and uncontroversial, he's a great role model to the younger players
    - Reliable and not injury prone
    - Been at the club for a long time and is an everpresent presence in the first team
    - Not playing in a key position, he'd be more accommodating to the pressures of captaincy

    What do you all think?

Honestly...I think Sagna would be a terrible choice. Sorry.

His temperament can be temporamental and he's not exactly vocal.

I'd like Verm (unless we buy a worthy potential captain in the summer - fuck being with the club ages that shit doesn't matter) as I think he's ideal. However I can see it being RVP, for the exact reason TH14 and others have mentioned.

Wenger doesn't make the best choice captain, he never has (apart from Vieira, and I think that just happened to be coincidence). he does it to keep somebody and/or to make them happy.

Having RVP as captain is a terrible idea, as he's slightly mental and it will just turn him off of his game.

Agreed, RvP would be just to keep him, like Henry and Cesc. Pointless. Give it to Verm. But it'll be Robin if Cesc leaves. Tis the Arsene way

How old was Adams when he got the captaincy?

21 I think. He was a born leader on the pitch though. Even with his high pitch shriek

If we manage to keep him through this mass exodus and for the next few years then Wilshere would make a great captain.

Ideally give it to Verms for the next 5 years and then give it to Wilshere but the way it's going I'd be very suprised if Wilshere is here in five years time.

Rambo? When Cesc and Nasri go, he will play a lot.I mean maybe not skipper this year but the year after. I reckon he's got it.

Also,I think Arsene should just tell the truth this year and just say if we make the top four we've overacheived. Saves all the crushing disappointment.

Not overachieved, just par imo. Anything else is a bonus to me, and the cost of a ticket is irrelevant. We all knew it would be tough for quite a few years after the move
