Google's latest attempt at the social.

Google’s just taken the wraps off of Google+, its brand new social networking layer which is apparently being positioned as the company’s answer to Facebook. Google+ will make use of a black bar at the top of every Google page for accessing new Google+ options for sharing content and accessing notifications. The service contains a lot of features Facebook users may feel comfortable with right from the start, including similarly-styled notifications, and a news stream for sharing location data, photos, links, and hilarious videos.

    Official site

    Some videos

So, who has an invite ;)

Didn't they already have a social networking thing which flopped everywhere except Brazil?

That was more twitter, this is more facebook.

I hate these social things, I have no particular interest in what people think, do or say.

ed: oh, you're talking about Orkut. :D

Buzz? yeah that didn't really go anywhere. This time they've cleverly incorporated it into the main Google page, which will probably piss off some people who'll shout about it and run off to Bing (lol).

    Article

    Quick impressions

Looks clean as you would expect. Will it get the users which really matters. Facebook haven't had a good challenge and they do mess up all the time so users might move. I don't think Facebook make it easy to switch your info to another service which may keep the current users grounded. Your feeding a info hungry monster either way.

If Facebook does a good job, and Google already has lots of money, why bother trying to take the place of Facebook?

Both advertising companies using user info and Facebook is starting to get a nice slice of the pie and who knows were Facebook will go next.

Capitalism/business demands constant growth and Google are one of the few with any chance of doing it.

This actually looks alright. You can at least separate your friends list up rather than spam everyone with something you'd rather only 5 or 6 saw.

Finally I can keep ex-girlfriends and current girlfriends separate.

Plus, I never use FB for anything other than stalking for new girlfriends and looking at pictures of morriss driving a tractor.

I know why they WANT to to it, I just wish people would exploit information about us in more original ways.

In an obtuse, woman logic manner.

Much like the obfuscated and deceptive nature of the privacy settings.

This new black bar at the top of the google homepage is kind of distracting, and terribly unpopular apparently.

People like Google's appearance, because it's clean and uncluttered. Now they seem hellbent on shoving stuff on there, or messing up the appearance (Google image search, anybody?).

If you want to get rid of the black bar, someone's come up with a workaround.

I like the idea of 'circles'. With FB there are things I'd like to share with my gaming friends that I wouldnt want my family members to see, and visa-versa.
