Rumoured for a next gen release...

The information was detailed to VideoGamer.com by a high-ranking industry source at Crytek, who stated that TimeSplitters 4 is currently being demonstrated internally, is being built with CryEngine 3, and was being shown privately in video form at E3 2011.

Crytek UK, who produced the other three games in the series as Free Radical, is still handling the development.

Both Microsoft and Crytek declined to comment.

The source reports that the graphics on TimeSplitters 4 are noticeably improved over current generation technology, with the DX11 tessellation effects allegedly having a huge impact on the visuals. Crytek believes that the game - and CryEngine 3 itself - will be seen as the cornerstone of next-generation development.

Crytek has invested heavily in DirectX 11 development primarily to focus on the new consoles, with the upcoming DX11 patch for the PC version of Crysis 2 being used internally as a benchmark of anticipated hardware trends.

As for the game itself, the new TimeSplitters is reported to focus on the series' branching paths and exploratory nature, with sandbox-style gameplay elements a big priority. The current goal is for levels to feature multiple routes that lead to the same overall conclusion.

Speculation about TimeSplitters 4 has been running since 2007. Since its initial announcement the game was even pegged to be a Wii-exclusive before languishing in development hell and being put on hiatus in 2009.

Can't lie, the possibilities excite me.

There hasn't been a better shooter than Timesplitters 2. There probably won't ever be.

TS is overrated. Fun stylings etc, but the gameplay was hardly anything to write home about.

Still, was good fun in multi.

I remember the challenges on TS2 being fun. And bastard hard.

TimeSplitters 2 with a MultiTap was truly one of the joys of the last generation. However, it seems to have been one of those franchises that couldn't quite make the leap to the new consoles for whatever reason.

If they rediscover the magic of the first two and forget Future Perfect, it could be a good little title.

So Future Perfect is the bastard child? It's the only one I've ever played, so I guess that's why I'm not seeing what the big dealio is.

Must say that Crysis 2's multiplayer wasn't anything special if you ask me.

Fun, and reasonably well designed it was however. Decent ranking up/progression system too.

Actually, TS2 is the only one I've ever played.

Must be something wrong with me then! :p

TS2 had incredibly fast movement speeds, basically everyone was sprinting about CoD style, so 'dodging' bullets was a big part of the gameplay. (Fast characters were...much faster) Campaign was fine, but hard.

TS3 had fast movement speeds, but not as fast, and the campaign was better. Future Perfect also made a brave attempt at having a plot, but it was mostly run as a ridiculous refuge in audacity because the entire game was made out of innuendo and such. It was also a rather good looking game for last generation.

Multi was roughly equal between the two imho, and quite a few of the better maps made it from TS2 to TS3. They also both had the ridiculously hard challenge modes and league modes, to the point that one of the league matches was you vs five bots in a capture point mode.

Really the best multiplayer shooters of last generation.

    Ignore the forum police.

Hopefully it will be good. Always a bit weary of franchises coming back after a while.

As much as i enjoyed TS2 this will tank in a big way, as a poster game for the next gen they've picked the wrong franchise.

I wonder how many of the Free Radical Design staff are still with Crytek? The Rare staff who left to create Free Radical were from the team who created Goldeneye and Perfect dark on the N64. No wonder Rare are shit now;when Microsoft bought Rare it was a bit like buying London Bridge, dumb Americans.

I never played Future Perfect for some reason, but Timesplitters and Timesplitters 2 are easily my favourite pure shooters ever.

Didn't anyone of any talent leave Free Radical long before Crytek bought them?

I really liked the extreme abundance of content TS2 had...Such a wealth of challenges and modes...The campaign was a mess though...Still enjoyable, but jumped around way too much...I would've liked some more levels in neo-tokyo for instance...

Still, good news it's not lost...
