Ultima Underworld or Planescape Torment. Or Fallout 1/2 (not 3).

    GHOSTBUSTERS

I've not played it myself yet but, as meme says, Planetscape Torment is one that highly regarded by many and a name that gets thrown around a lot.

KOTOR and Deus Ex (not solely an RPG but has many elements of one).

    This.

No matter how much reading you do about it, nothing will ever do Planescape Torment justice.

I'll second the Baldurs gate and Icewind Dale boxsets. Utterly amazing games IMO.
You can get them really cheap now too.

Im fact, most DandD games on the pc are great.

Mass Effect is great, plenty of action and never boring.

    KOTOR for me.

Planescape Torment is fantastic in many ways, and Baldur's Gate is good too, but I just don't care for all the D&D lore and all the background you have to read up about. It's just dull dull dull. I wish western RPGs created worlds as interesting and original as JRPGs, or JRPGs had gameplay as good as western ones.

Glad to see Bioware taking new directions in recent years with Mass Effect and Jade Empire, both of which I found far more enjoyable than the usual D&D crap, but both suffered from tipping the balance away from RPG and towards action a little too much I thought.

I tried KOTOR, but found the party AI too frustratingly stupid.

Yeah, it's planescape torment. And I've played every game ever, so I should know.

I've turned off all the avatars and crap, so don't expect me to be impressed by yours.

Total War: Shogun2 is my current answer to everything.
Lots of choices, stats and I can make the story up as I go along.

For me, the best would be

    Ultima Underworld 1+2
    Baldur's Gate 2
    System Shock (1)
    Wizardry 7
    Fallout (1)

Didn't play PC RPG in a long time. The Vampire The Masquerade games are probably great as well.
