    Well, I'm judging it by the original Carrier Command and it's got that beat as far as presentation is concerned:)

    The pathfinding seems really crap though; I've had to extract my Walruses quite a few times and don't talk to me about swamps...

    Quick question:-

    People seem to find the path finding quite horrendous in this game. So when you order your tanks around, can you set waypoints or is it just a case of selecting a single point and hoping your unit can make it there unscathed?

    Dunno, I clicked to send a Walrus somewhere and it just went crazy and started shooting at it :)

    Then I set a Walrus to assist me and stormed an enemy command centre, wondered why I was taking so many hits when I switched to the other Walrus and he was stuck on a rock 500m away.

    Ugggggh, and again and again! Stop driving in to a tree, reversing, then doing it again!

    Best point - natural outdoor environments look nice.

    Uninstalled.

    Don't want to be too miserable about it, just got lots of other stuff to play that's fun :)

    Interested to see some reviews for this anyway from people who've spent more time with it.

    I'm miserable about it.

    I couldn't bring myself to try and play it any more, it's just horrible. It's not even patchably horrible, it's just fundamentally shit.

    Well.....I've got it now and the 1.2 patch update and............I like it despite some hideous path finding.Only played the strategy campaign tho and did get my arse handed to me even on easy skill level.

    This is definately a slow burner and the inevitable patches will surely improve things further.

    @Dirtbox

    Called it in a PlaySF preview in the last issue. Controls were hideous, AI was shocking, story was standard-BIS-terrible.

    Shame really.

    There's no problom with the controls, it's that the game is like a parody poor, charmless rip off of every popular sci-fi shooter since 2001. The strategy option relies too heavily on having to play through a single player campaign that makes the Battlefield 3 single player seem almost playable.

    Hilarious Walrus pathfinding aside (they really are idiots!), I've been enjoying this quite a lot. I'm not sure what someone who didn't play the original would make of it, though. What with this and XCOM, it's nostalgia overload recently.

    Now if someone would just remake Mercenary 3...

    Yeah I agree with you Scimarad....The path finding of the Walrus tanks can be hideous, especially when all 4 are out and sometimes the Mantas fly into the sides of mountains but apart from that I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

    Apart from a complete lock up at a very bad time.

    My favourite WTF moment so far was when I sent a really badly damaged Walrus to get repaired at an installation about a third of the island away. The Walrus almost made it but then hit a cactus and EXPLODED! That is one hell of a tough cactus:)

    I also once grabbed four of them and told them all to make for the same point. Somehow two of them managed to have a head on collision on a not particularly narrow road and spent the next several minutes headbutting each other!

    I actually find their idiotic antics quite amusing rather than irritating.

    Anyone familiar with the original? It was probably one of my all time favourite Atari-ST games back in 1991.

    I guess they've cocked up the remake, as the original's still very playable and enjoyable.

    TBH, I expected them to do a Syndicate, and chuck out an FPS with knobs on. I'll wait for a patch, then consider having a go when the price matches the reviews.

    @YenRug

    I actually bookmarked their page several years ago, and have had the link floating around in my gaming section various browsers' bookmarks since probably 2007 or prior.

    I may have a look in my archive at some point to see if I can find roughly when I added it.

    I remember it on Atari ST, I also remember it being impenetrable :)

    It wasn't at all impenetrable. Or did you not have a boxed copy with the manual?

    @Maturin Most probably a dodgy copy from the guy over the road, so no manual I imagine - plus I was 10ish so getting me to read a manual might've been a challenge :)

    Demo released:

    http://www.carriercommand.com/demo/

    I can at least now find out if my current PC is capable of playing it, or if I have to wait for when I get my new PC.

    I had a legit one. First thing I bought with my first Saturday job paypacket. I think I bought OIDS the next week.

    @monkehhh

    I was only around age 11 when I first played it. Fell in love with it! In fact - I reckon I'll try to get it running in a playable state over the next few days / weeks on my PCs.
