Actually it makes a lot of sense to get reviewers who love a certain genre, to review the games of that genre. Since said games will be purchased by people who love the genre, they will probably want to know the opinion of someone who has similar tastes to them.

That's also why COD games keep getting high scores - they are reviewed by people who like COD games. Which, again, makes sense because the games are aimed at people who like COD.

Besides, just because you love a genre, doesn't mean you have to absolutely adore every game of that kind. NSMB2 and Ghosts' average scores are below 80%. If the games are not as good as the reviewers want, the scores will suffer.

I personally can't think of many 3D platformers that come close to 3D World, besides the Galaxy games (which are better). Most platformers tend to lean towards being an adventure game, lacking in platforming variation and compensating with a story that wouldn't be out of place in a Saturday morning cartoon. Mario has always side-stepped the narrative and focused purely on platforming.
I remember Sly 4: TIT getting criticised in reviews for too much variation. These days I honestly think reviews are decided by franchise & platform with the actual game making up about 25% of the review - obviously it all talks about the game but the opinions contained within are all to do with franchise&platform.

To be honest the metacritic score for Mario Sunshine is pretty inflated for one so there's probably some truth to all this, but I think SM3DW is stunning. It's a straightforward platformer true enough but I've got absolutely no problem with that, it's not like it claims to be open world with RPG elements and lightgun support.

I've never played Sly 4, to be honest. What I had played of the original was ok, but felt exactly like one of those games I was trying to describe. Definitely more an adventure game, rather than an out-right platformer.

Yes there's a storyline but it doesn't detract from the gameplay, in fact it enhances it IMO as it leads to massive variety in locations, activities, gameplay etc.

Yeah, Sly is a good series. They've continued to mix the characters and level design up well and have story throughout.

I tried to play Sly 4 but got fed-up of the constant hand-holding and cut-scenes every few seconds.

Not saying it's a bad game, just that Mario might as well be its own genre compared to most 3D platformers.
  • Deleted user 11 August 2014 14:00:45
It is. It's called the rehash genre.

Not got a wii u yet but been grabbing wii and wii u games for it off eBay so far Mario Galaxy 2 played first many years ago was only £10 grabbed Metriod Prime Trilogy was £50 minds but never played 2 & 3 and now with added wiimote support also got Metroid other M for £3 unopened which was a steal. As for wii u games just Zombie U and Wind Waker so far.

This'll be the last time I bang on about it in this thread, but for anybody that hasn't had a look already, check out X-Type Plus. It's a budget-priced twin-stick shooter/bullet dodger and it's amazing. Simple, but incredibly addictive. One of the best eShop games out there, in my opinion.

It looks more like a weapon than a case. It might well fit a brick in it!

On a side note, i've just bought Super Punch Out, Mega Man 1 & 2, Pac-Man and Wrecking Crew in the sales. Going to have to book off an evening from work and play some old retro goodness.

Edit - I've also got Simon's Quest on the go, which isn't as bad as some say. Not amazing, but enjoyable.

Rumour that there's going to be a big Nintendo release every month, next year, though it may well include HD remasters. A bit sketchy as it's from some French guy's Twitter, however, he apparently was proved right on a couple of previous big announcements that he got the jump on so may well prove kosher.

It's a SNES controller. It feels exactly like a SNES controller did. All the buttons are exactly as they should be, with the right amount of springiness. I don't think you could tell the difference if you held them side by side, though to be fair I've never actually tried this.
