I didn't like what I played of Sonic Racing, but I appreciate that it has a lot more features and variety than Mario Kart 7 (which admittedly, as a package, was pretty barebones). But MK7 had the fundamentals absolutely spot-on - 60fps with tight handling and some great course design.

MK7's purity of design worked as a handheld game, but Nintendo won't be able to get away with the same thing for MK8 - the trailers may look good but it'll need a lot more to justify a purchase (just playing Mario Kart on a big-screen in HD is, for me, not enough).

What more do you really want from Mario Kart other than great gameplay, great tracks and a fun online mode?

    Keep it simple.

We can be assured that Nintendo won't be over burdening themselves with anything other than a slight MK7 iteration so keeping it simple is likely what we'll get. Let's hope they get the online right this time. 4th time lucky....

No matter how little effort appears to go into each game compared with Sonic, it's still fundamentally the better racer for me. As others have said, the core racing is superior which is what it boils down to when you strip away the bells and whistles.

So how exactly does the WiiU decide what groups appear in your Miiverse Plaza?

Hang on. The elves inside the gamepad are using voodoo? Little bastards, they promised me they were from Hogwarts.

Great course design and handling > features. The professionals understand this.

... but you seem to lack the foresight that some folks prefer playing Sonic All Stars Transformed over your precious Mario Kart.

You come across as awfully unprofessional, if anything!

It is possible to enjoy both, yet still enjoy one more than the other. I know it might be difficult to understand this.

    NO YOU CANNOT!

Whoa, there fella. This is the Wii U thread.

    The Rules here are simple.

    1. One product is definitively better than the other.
    2. Nothing is ever subjective or down to opinion.
    3. Your opinion is fact, you must aggravate and belittle all those who disagree.

I think in the end of the day both games are at their best with friends, off/online. Neither disappoints in these circumstances, Personally , although I thought that Sonic Racing was spanglier MK just 'felt' better

    @CharlieStCloud

I have only tried the demo of Sonic Racing so I can't really weigh in.

But of course Mario Kart is far superior. BECAUSE REASONS.

    I don't like either.

I used to enjoy Mario Kart, but I just find it boring now. I didn't enjoy Sonic as its trying to be Mario kart. IMO.

I'm slightly tired of kart games in general. Especially as, since the snes days, They've become more party than racing game. Much more looking forward to smash than kart.

anyone know (for sure) if Wii U (and 3DS for that matter) is(are) region locked? looking at the web, seems that was the plan ... I was planning to get a USA Wii U (with airmiles), but if its confirmed I could only play USA games, then I might use my miles on a PS4 instead (and just buy a european wii u)

Yeah, this is pretty much where i'm at. I wasnt keen on MK Wii, MK7 didnt really domuch for me and the need to drift *everywhere* in sonic racing just puts me off.

I've enjoyed Sonic Transformed more than any other kart racer in the last few years. There are still things I don't like especially those boost races but generally I've spent many more hours on it than recent Mario kart games. I'm hopeful the new Mario kart can beat it though. I've actually played Transformed more on the PC than wii u. The wii u version is quite low res at something like 1024x576 and its looks noticably standard definition on my 1080p tv. The PC version runs easily at 1080p with improved textures. The xbox 360 and PS3 versions are higher res than wii u.

I feel Mariokart wii u will probably easily beat the wii u version of transformed but may not be as good as transformed running on PC.

    That IS a bargain.

Hmmm... I'd still need a new PS3 before I grabbed that. 500GB PS3s are £210 with GT6, ACIV and TLOU at the moment on Amazon!

Bloody good Wii U deal, though.

One contains some of the stuff you need to use the console as well as enough space to keep a couple of save games. The other is useless out of the box.† Either way expect to buy a hard drive and budget 50 pound minimum for peripherals unless you had a wii.
