Nintendo will only drop the price as a last resort.

The Dreamcast didn't fail because of Sega, it failed because of consumers waiting for the PS2, and developers seeing this and pulling the plug early. Sega's finances were why it was the last console, not why it failed.

Sure Nintendo make money as a whole, however they certainly don't want to continue losing money with a product that is decreasing in market share. It just doesn't make sense.

Short of a massive price drop (ie to 150 or even less) and before the competition release their new machines, I honestly don't see how the public and developers as a whole will care enough about the Wii-U, let alone know what it is.

Ahh still have fond memories of the Dreamcast. Such a shame.

That's not true though. They were the same situation with the Wii U, even before a price cut. Which is why I don't think a price cut is as likely as people may think. At least not an official one. Retailers are obviously discounting it heavily already, but that seems more like a stock clearing exercise, which is obviously not a positive thing for Nintendo.

I don't think you can't blame Sega for the death of the Dreamcast. Sure developers pulled the plug but it is Sega's job to convince developers that their console should be the lead for their games, they didn't do that and didn't have the financial strength to compete for licenses.

Nintendo for me are in a stronger position. They still do have the major developers support. I think if they release a Zelda, Mario Kart or Metroid Prime and the console stills shows no hope then they will pull the plug.

    @Aretak

    Indeed.

It's all very grim. I don't see a way out personally, short of letting it die a quiet death.

People have short memories. The 360's launch line up was piss poor and took ages for some decent games to be pushed through.
I can remember it fine actually - it launched with PGR3, Kameo and Condemned as well as Quake 4, Perfect Dark Zero and King Kong. That's not that bad. Didn't convince me to buy one though, nor would I till a couple of years later.

That 360 list is poor. Granted it's far more original than the Wii U launch, but the only 360 game I enjoyed from that list was PGR 3. There's a couple i've not played. That and people love Oblivion, but that list really isn't very good. Perfect Dark and Kameo were average. Tony Hawk was getting old. Gun GRAW and amped weren't anything to get excited over at then.

If it hadn't been for modern combat 2, which was available on the PS2 as well, i'd not have bothered with the 360 for a long time.

GRAW was an excellent game and its graphics were mindblowing at the time.

The Wii U only needs a single game sale before Nintendo make a profit, so it's not really in the same situation as the 3DS (which took a massive hit to margins when price was reduced). So while there may be a loss on the console, an attach rate of 1.0 makes a profit. There's scope for a reduction if needs be.

The last few pages were actual decent discussion by people without any kind of axe to grind, discussing why they thought Nintendo might be in trouble with this console, which is looking quite likely right now.

Just a thought, but why don't you go fuck yourself in the eye with a skewer?

If the machine was 150 including a decent game I'd buy one tomorrow. Otherwise I think like most others, people are waiting for the PS4, Xbox 3, or are simply happy with what they already have (be it a 360, PS3, Wii or phone/tablet).
    This.
I'd really like to play MH3 Ultimate, but there's no way I'm paying >300 for it.

What a terrible list. Zombie U and Mario and the other games, of which there'll be many by the end of the year, are 1000 times better than all of those combined.

I personally prefer what's out for Wii U to that list of 360 games, though as I've said before keeping me happy isn't an effective business plan.

I'd kick the living daylights out of the producers of Tipping Point - Ghandi

Some bloody good games in that list. Most of them wouldn't hold up to recent games but I'm reminded why I bought a 360 in the first place. Ah the memories.

@alexc7496 They had publishers and push from Devs. From memory, Max Payne and Half Life were both in the works for it; along with other titles. The problem was SEGA

The one that stands out on the list is Oblivion, and for me that really emphasises the difference.

It's all very well still going on about the WiiU "launch" line up, but we're into the 5th month now. As per the list above, at the same point in the 360s lifespan we were past the whole launch thing, and Oblivion represents the first of many real proper heavyweight games, creating a real reason to get out and buy a 360. I'm seeing nothing like that on the WiiU.
  • Deleted user 19 March 2013 08:53:57
Does anyone else think Nintendo haven't really evolved beyond Japan as a company? They have loads of good titles (Mario, Zelda etc), but there hasn't really been much from the western developers to me. They seem really weak on that front..

I have Half Life on the Dreamcast, it clearly wasn't optimised and the controls are painful compared to today's standards.

I picked one up last week (270 for the premium pack, which was too close to my 250 euro buying threshold to pass up) - Only got Nintendoland right now, which is a blast with the kids (still need to beat my sons DK crash course score). The Rayman demo is ace (as in laugh out loud funny), too bad they delayed it.

The situation reminds me of the time I bought the DS at release (the 'phat' one). There was absolutely nothing except Meteos at the time that caught my interest, but I bought it anyway. It still kept me happy with my backlog of GBA games until the 'real' stuff came out.
I guess I bought the WiiU expecting the same - give it some time people.

I'm tempted by Monster Hunter, but first I need to finish the DLC of another bastard-hard game (Dark Souls NG+).
