    Doesn't help but isn't crippling.

But whether a lack of initial demand is even true is debatable given huge numbers of preorders and widespread reports of immediate sellouts (though that could be due to deliberately providing insufficient supply to meet demand)

Seriously though, my local Asda had 4 Premium consoles for launch and still had 1 left at 9:30am. I actually queued for 13.5 hours to buy a 360 at launch at the same store and droves of people turned up throughout the day enquiring about the system and left disappointed as there was only 6 bundles available at launch.

Yes there is confusion with the Wii U and many people Iíve spoken to hadnít even heard of it; never mind contemplating whether to buy one. The ridiculous time spent downloading the update has statistically worked in Nintendoís favour as Wii U users spend more time online than Xbox Live and PSN users.

Got as far as the system update itself, but there's no movement in that bar at all. It's pure grey. Nothing. Gulp!

    It's only been a minute I suppose.
Be patient, it does take ages.

My main issue with the OS so far is that it isn't particularly responsive - it takes ages to open different apps and menus or to update things in real-time.

Out of curiosity, ive just asked a few of the "uninitiated" chaps in work if they know what a Wii U is.

Two of them thought i was on about the Wii and the other one said "oh yeah, yeah, its that new iPad-thing you can use with the Wii".

I think that's more due to the rubbish job Nintendo have done at explaining WiiU and creating a buzz around it to the general public.

even if most people won't buy one yet, there should still be a sense of hype about it. I've seen nothing whatsoever on tv about it, no ad, no news, nothing. For the follow up to a console that sold incredible numbers that is astonishingly bad marketing and PR.

Yeah that's probably right. So, drawing parallel consclusions, I reckon the WiiU will be as successful.

Edit: wait, hang on, have I got confused?

I didn't realise something didn't qualify as a console just because it was a handheld. Horses/courses.

Ok then, definitely the first Xbox, definitely the Gamecube. Both went on to be successful - not runaway successes in terms of numbers, but the former gained sufficient market penetration to establish MS as a serious contender in the console space and the latter was still very profitable for Nintendo.

Success and failure is in the eye of the beholder.

The reason the PS3 didnt sell out was that it was the price of a small car.

Also, its still a bit of a cunts trick to mark out the SKUs by colour. You may as well mark the white one with a scarlet P for poor.

And a lot of people have stated the thing putting them off buying a WiiU right now is the price.

You have a point, but ultimately I'm not sure it matters. People said the same thing about the Arcade version of the 360 (not about the colour, but about it being a clearly inferior SKU). It still sold in large numbers despite "better" SKUs being available.

At least with the WiiU it supports 3rd party storage options out the box. People may buy it either because a) they are more interested in retail titles than digital purchases and b) they may already have/intend to purchase 3rd party additional storage capacity.

If people can get the same or more capacity by buying a cheaper 3rd party peripheral than buying the most expensive "official" best option, they will tend to do so.

The PS3's price point was based on the fact it was the most powerful console available and had a Blu-Ray drive built in.

The WiiU's price point is based on whoever set it being a complete moron.

Take your point about launch sell outs though, must be my memory.

I think the fact that there are half a dozen different packs you can buy and they havent really explained anything about the pro-controller hasnt helped either.

It's moronic to ensure that you're not chasing sell out launch numbers through loss leading?

Even at its ridiculous asking price at launch, the PS3 was still less than half its manufacturing cost by common estimates.

@darkmorgado Sometimes, if you need the buzz to drive sales. However I think Nintendo don't really need the loss leader sales, just some more hype to let the public know this thing is out and new.

I can sort of understand why they haven't really marketed the pro controller or even included it as standard; they want the gamepad to be the focus here as it is what sufficiently separates the machine from the other players in the market.

Sony/MS tend to focus on specs (and more recently multimedia), Nintendo tends to focus on interaction and interface.

Common estimates that think the cost of a console is purely hardware components and no recovery of development costs.
