I checked it again last night - there's a section for Xbox games, but there's also a "coming soon" section for Windows games - some are just snippets from a boxart/logo where you can't tell which game it is supposed to be (like that car game), others show the game's title (Arcade Pinball Fx 2 was one, and some boatracing thingy another), both of which are (announced) Windows games.
It lists 360 games, which sucks.
Still, the art for the others where you can't read the title might just be placeholders. -

Just to clarify the upgrade path, an update at the bottom of this article - http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-puts-more-muscle-behind-windows-8-upgrade-push-7000000141/
Actually it's a quote from an MS spokesman, published on ZDNet. But whatever, good luck with your upgrade
Windows Communication Manager Brandon Leblanc added an update about the ability of Windows 8 testers to upgrade. He said (in the comments of the post:
Edited by Balboa at 00:17:37 13-07-2012
"(P)eople can move from the Windows 8 Release Preview to Windows 8 Pro using the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and will only have the options to migrate their personal files or keep nothing at all when upgrading. People moving from the Windows 8 Release Preview will need to make sure you have an underlying license for either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7."
Update No. 2 (July 5): Computerworld (citing Microsoft as its source) says that users running the Windows 8 Release Preview also will be allowed to move to the Windows 8 Pro final version for $39.99 once the OS is generally available. Only personal data files will be kept, however; no settings or applications will be automatically moved over as part of the process, Computerworld added.
This seems to back the gizmodo article that you don't need a previous version of Windows, only the Release Preview to upgrade for £26.

Registered 7 years agoHow cool is this - Carry YOUR Windows OS on a USB drive - http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/07/you-can-carry-your-entire-windows-8-life-on-one-tiny-usb-drive/ - although I think this has been done before but involved alot of work.
Also, I was looking for a reliable, light weight backup solution in Win 8 and discovered "File History" which is built-in. Connect up an external drive (or network drive) and turn it on. It only works on the Libraries so keep important info in there, and it'll keep previous versions of those files (as they changed). -

Registered 6 years ago@sport Yeah - that ZDNet article is older than the one I quoted from though.
The problem is upgrade means two different things, and I still think Brandon was talking about installing rather than buying.
I don't have a dog in this race, so I'm leaving it at that. I just didn't want people to possibly screw themselves over. -

Registered 7 years ago@Balboa - yeah I know. It's still a bit unclear. I would like absolute clarification on installing Win 8 RP on a fresh machine, then moving to Pro.
We'll wait and see - absolutely loving Win 8 anyway. -

Registered 10 years agoYeah after getting used to it on my 5 year old laptop I want to install it on my desktop.
But I'll wait until I purchase an SSD and stick it on that.
How would you go about uninstalling windows 7 once you eventually upgrade if you install win 8 on another drive?

Went back to Windows 7 for now because I ran into a few compatibility problems. Couldn't get The Walking Dead to run under Win 8, nor any game that requires Games for Windows authentification because the sign-in thingy doesn't even install under Win 8.
I can't see I am particularly surprised that it's mostly Microsoft stuff that has the biggest issues. -
Oh that's weird. I bought Arkham City in the Steam sale and that works fine, it's a Games for shitting Windows Bastard Live title.

Starting a game works, but you're screwed (at least I was) when GfW tries to do an update within a game. If it's making the updates through Steam itself, you're probably safe, though.DDevil wrote:

Actually it says it all in that Gizmodo link...if the info is accurate.

Registered 7 years agoHey TH14, try this out before you load everything on the machine.
Stress test the bugger. Load one game up and run it at max and see how it runs. My lappy has gone back as the combination of an i7 (they run hot) and a GPU is causing the FPS to drop to single digits after 30 minutes play. -

Registered 8 years agoThe only thing it seems to have fucked up for me, is Battlefield 3. It still works, but is not without issues. I overwrote my main Windows 7 install so I'm just going to have to deal with it. Planning to do a fresh install when the final version hits anyway.

Will see what i can find. Im replacing the 320gb 5400rpm drive with an ssd anyway, so a fresh install is needed regardless!
Its not a big deal if i have to rewipe and install win 7 which came with the laptop
Good idea to have something to benchmark and compare it with though -

Registered 7 years ago@THFourteen It's mainly to see if the bugger can cope with the heat. I presume you'll have either an i5 or i7 processor. They run at up to 90C so the motherboard has to deal with a lot of heat. Mine obviously couldn't, serves me right for listening to ArmouredBear.gif)
Best of luck though, when they work the new GPU are fab for laptop gaming. -

Registered 3 years agoI can't install Windows 8. When it reboots to finish the install I get a page fault and it puts windows 7 back on.
I don't know if it will work if I do a clean install but tbh I can't be bothered. It takes about 2.5 hours to install the upgrade. -

Registered 8 years ago@RunningMan got an ivy bridge i7 but its dual core not quad core.
Interesting comments about the temperature, so Windows 8 runs the cpu hotter than windows 7? How wierd.
will have to get cpuz and take a look i guess. I'm not a massive fan of running benchmarking programs for hours and hours on my machines, as i think its unrealistic, but i should be able to play an FPS and let you know.
also theres a bios mod i want to use to overclock the GPU - a lot of people on the notebook review forum are using it and seems to work great.
ah an evening of fiddling. its geek heaven. -
@THFourteen, the new ivy bridge chips just run a lot hotter than a lot of people expect. They are rated up to 105C so it's usually fine. Sound likes you're in for a fun evening
