    OMGOMGOMGOMG

    I've just received delivery of

    3x Z820 HP Workstations's each with
    2x E5-2687W CPU's
    96GB of DDR3 1600 RAM
    2TB Drives
    Quadro 6000 6GB GFX cards
    1125W PSU's

I've also just been given the thumbs up from our Applications manager to 'test them'

Which means, ARMA 3 and a dozen other super heavy games that I can think of.

    Game on!

Try bitcoin mining or Prime95 if you want to give them a proper workout.

@WoodenSpoon For a major Oil and Gas company. They will be used by Geophysicist who trawl through subsurface data looking for the next big thing in the North Sea

Superbas, I know that would be the proper way to give them a workout but that way I can't play games on them...

Can anyone think of some ARMA 3 Scenarios which are just absolutely mega? I want to test this puppy. Just had a little fly around on the helicopter Scenario. Was getting 16fps with everything cranked to ultra but it felt oddly smooth?

Dear urban, can I have one of those PCs? Or a job? :)

On a related note, I'm seeing what the new Intel stuff is like in the next few days and upgrading my PC accordingly (knackered motherboard / RAM, new CPU, new GPU). I'm increasingly aware that things are starting to creak and groan.

Quick roundup of the pre-E3 stream Bohemia hosted last night with details on the beta which should be released a couple of weeks after E3.

I wonder if they'll ever do away with the floaty aiming in these games. I know it's meant to be a design decision but it really makes them a chore to play sometimes.

@WoodenSpoon I know what you mean, but they're trying to replicate holding a real gun, and it simply isnt as snappy as Battlefield and CoD would have most people believe.

Having fired an RDS M4A1 in Prague, I think its a nice approximation of how you handle and position an actual weapon in real life, and is part of the appeal for me.

@WoodenSpoon The handling is completely different in ARMA 3. Much more fluid.

It definitely feels better, but then you have an absolute shed-load of possible stances (need to learn the keys properly). Thankfully they're introducing a stance indicator!

I think I might take a punt... what kind of state is the alpha in? Worth 20 to poke around in?

Usually I'd just take the plunge but given the state its predecessors have been released in I'm thinking twice.

I'd say easily worth it from my experience.

It's in an excellent state to give you a feel for the game and to play a few coop missions. The controls are much improved too. It's absolutely worth 20 squid!

Considering someone was able to get the ArmA 2 maps into ArmA 3, I'd imagine there's even a way of porting those campaigns and missions over. The really good thing being that on many people's PCs, ArmA 3 seems to perform better than 2. It looks better too.

Absolutely worth it - the devs are really updating a lot and listening.

    LINKY

Still a work in progress but you can run around the maps right now.

Has anyone else noticed the performance of the game has improved recently? I got A3 on release of the Alpha, and had to turn down a lot of details to low (but still 1080p) to keep things nice and fluid in all eventualities. I then got stuck back into Day Z and Breaking Point, but having updated and played A3 this weekend, Ive bumped up my draw distances, and details up to standard, enabled FXAA, and it looks fantastic and is smooth throughout all the scenarios no matter whats happening, its really great.

Also, if anybody doesn't know, if you enable the developer version under the steam settings (right click Arma 3 Alpha>properties>beta>drop down menu) theres a 500mb patch which adds amongst other things a Ghillie sniper suit and .408 sniper rifle that zeros up to 2300m(!)

I've left the alpha alone apart from a few hours during the beginning of the rollout and I think i'll leave it a bit longer till there's some more worthwhile content. ARMA2 is still keeping me very happy and i'm sure it will do even after ARMA3 is out.

I thought I was the only one to just try out the basics for a short while. I've basically only played the included missions.

bloody hell. Steam tells me I've spent 80 hours playing the alpha. To be fair, probably about 45 of those have been spent waiting for a chopper pilot on coop domination maps, but still...

Think I'll just switch everything off.
