Registered 9 years agoI had a properly good game on Wasteland last night, plenty of mayhem and funtimes.
We should REALLY get a group or a couple of groups up and own a server.
I took out some opFOR at a downed helicopter only to go down, raid an NLAW and an LMG. Drove back up the hill and my pickup came under fire from a Heli. I drove over the ridge, whipped out the NLAW to the guys screaming GOGOGOGO HE HAS ROCKET! *POWWSSSCHHHH* *BOOOOOOOM*
Ah Emergent gameplay. -

Registered 6 years agoOk...Rant on (forgive me)
This game has to be the most unforgiving, unwelcoming game I have ever played, and I include Dark Souls et al...
Firsty WTF are you suppose to do? half the time on a multiplayer game I run around not seeing another soul, I presume this game mode is called "wasteland"?
Secondly I accidentally shot a helicopter as I had no idea it was friendly, and OMG the server went nuts, it was like I had killed their mother...
I tried to explain that I was a new player, but nope I was insulted and shot at by friendlies, until I left the server..
Thirdly is there a FAQ for new players anywhere, as I tried the single player games but the AI seems to shoot me from about a mile away!!
I need help, ok it was only £20 but it feels like £20 wasted as I dont think I have ever come across such a closed community -

Registered 8 years agoNot really a closed community, you just had the misfortune of joining a server of idiots.

Several short videos on how to play. Arma takes some getting used to. You can also lower the difficulty if the AI insta-headshots you, they are curently very unbalanced on veteran and elite difficulty. -

Arma is complicated. Best thing you can probably do to begin with is play the single-player infantry showcase a few times, until you can complete it. It'll help you get used to the new stances(hold LCTRL & W/S/A/D to adjust stances), combat etc.
Yes, the enemy will see you from several hundred metres. As soon as shots are fired, you should be hitting the deck and crawling/crouch-running for cover. Usual engagement ranges in Arma are anything from CQB to 500+ metres, and a single bullet can kill, so you want to be careful.
In SP (and most MP), your map will show you your objectives/tasks etc, so check the map for info on where to do & what to do.
Joining multiplayer is a very different beast. MP can have so many different types of game-modes, you should check what you're joining before you jump in. Servers labeled 'CO-OP 10' etc are co-op missions, probably your best starting point. Wasteland servers are giant survival-esque missions, and I forget what the war-zone ones are called, but they're generally larger-scale missions with multiple squads attempting to take & control territory.
Start with the SP, and when you're comfortable with it, try some co-op. Don't dive into random MP missions, if you do try MP, always use voice and try to talk to the people you're playing with. Be willing to learn, and some community vets will go easy on you. Nailing friendly choppers is bound to get you raged at, but you'll get the hang of it..gif)
Given that Tiger's on the case with missions already, and I'm having a play around with the editor myself, might soon be time to resurrect the old sunday night slot!
Edit: Also have keys, pm or post in thread.gif)

Registered 9 years ago@aeschylus Believe me, we have all been there with ARMA, I barely played the first one and then thanks to Orpheus a bunch of us started playing ARMA 2 quite a lot and every Sunday. It's a game of love and hate, ARMA 2 had something I wish they had included in the ARMA 3 Alpha (Armoury) It was fantastic for just fucking about with the weapons and very short missions to get into the mindset of a simulation war game.
I find it a much more visceral way of playing video games and the emergent gameplay that can occur in a lot of these mods and in the actual full game is something that has revitalised my love for video games.
Emergent gameplay is the future imo. Sandbox do what the fuck you like, I've loved it since I got my hands on Hunter (Amiga) when I was 6, I loved it even more when I got my hands on GTA at age 13 and ARMA/DAY Z...I don't want to know how many hours that has of my life.
