After a two week publicity exercise which saw Arma fans digging up crates in real Eastern European fields identified through in-game footage and clues relating to the Arma series posted as 'hacks' on various BI websites, Bohemia Interactive have made their announcement:

Arma 3 has been announced for a 2012 release!

    http://www.bistudio.com/index.php/english/games/arma3

Page may or may not load as I suspect it's being CTRL F5'd by a thousand ARMA fans at the moment. The game features a new European theatre of conflict (a 'Mediterranean island deep behind enemy lines') and 'radical engine improvements'.

    System requirements
Operating system: Windows 7 / Vista
Processor: Intel Core i5 or AMD Athlon Phenom X4 or faster
    Memory: 2 GB
Video card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 or ATI Radeon HD 5770 with Shader Model 3 and 896 MB VRAM, or faster
    DVD: Dual Layer compatible
Hard disk: 15 GB free space
    Other: DirectX® 10

Original 'hack' story by PCGamer as I can't get it to link nicely as part of the copy for some weird reason:

    Captain Scott Miller, eh?

Wasn't he the guy from Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter?

Poor guy always seems to end up in the wrong place at the wrong time... :(

I'll be honest: I loved Arma II right up until I came upon a campaign stopping bug. Never went back, did it get patched at all?

    Site looks nice!

@ hollowroom - yes, a lot. It's up to v1.9something now, performance/bug improvements across all areas. We've been having some good co-op games in Arma2 & Op Arrowhead the last couple of weeks, check the thread in General Gaming :)

I'll do that. I found it in my games list the other day and realised I hadn't played it since last year sometime.

Scott Mitchell is the Ghost, by the time of Endwar he's a general, not sure how that happened.

So Bohemia are doing this and Take On Helicopters at the same time, they're certainly keeping busy.

    This space left intentionally blank.

Seems strange they're using the Comanche, it was cancelled back in 2004.

The OBL raid was flown by some kind of stealth Blackhawk that the US government has managed to keep secret so who knows if it was really cancelled.

They need to learn how to optimise their games before making another one. Arma and Arma II are just appalling.

Runs fine here on a 2 year old PC, are you trying it on a netbook ?

Hope they finally tighten up the controls, they've always felt weirdly disembodied and floaty.

Quote from RPS made me laugh. "they’d do well to make it a bit more fluid and connected so you don’t feel like a tiny Men In Black alien piloting a giant man-suit from behind the eyes with levers."

All true but it's fine once you are looking down sights and turn down the head bob feature.

I'm looking forward to the editor more than anything. That thing is stupidly stupidly addictive (like MMO addictive). Once you get the hang of how it works it's like having a giant army lego set. Spent many an hour building awesome army bases and chucking loads of enemies at it while viewing from afar in the body of a cow or something :)

One question: will the user interface become more streamlined? I hate the word as well, but this game, along with Dwarf Fortress, desperately needs a better control scheme.

The floatiness is partly the game not liking some people comps, part not changing the settings to tighten it up and part the devs trying to find a way to stop people playing it like quake 3 arena.

They definitely need to find a way of making the animations segue into each other more fluidly, especially when they're interrupted. ArmA2 made massive strides in this direction with things like the stooped run and the like.

*sigh* Yes a highly top secret stealth Blackhawk that wasn't. They were almost certainly Blackhawks from SOCOM which are modified, essentially with a stealth kit, for covert operations. The adaptations change the outline of parts of the helicopter, suppress sound, suppress heat emissions and various other things. One of the helicopters was shown in an early mockup at the Mildenhall airshow when it still ran, though that version would be considerably behind current technology.

Still, be interested in seeing what Arm A 3 is like.

Demo from E3. Not a direct feed sadly but it's decent quality. Can't wait!
