Charlie Brooker, creator of E4 zombie drama Dead Set and a co-presenter of 10 O'Clock Live, has scripted Black Mirror, a "darkly comic drama series" expected to be broadcast on Channel 4 later this year.

Billed by Channel 4 as a "hybrid of The Twilight Zone and Tales of the Unexpected", the series consists of three, hour-long standalone dramas dealing with 21st century techno-paranoia, "some comic, some shocking".

"Growing up, I always loved The Twilight Zone and shows of that ilk. Black Mirror won't be anything like those, but on the other hand, it's closer to them than, say, Downton Abbey," said Brooker, who also a columnist for the Guardian, part of the group that publishes MediaGuardian.co.uk.

"It combines satire, technology, absurdity, and a pinch of surprise, and it all takes place in a world you almost almost totally recognise. It changes each week like the weather, but hopefully about 2,000 times more entertaining. If you don't like it, you will be beaten about the face and neck by Channel 4 executives."

Black Mirror was commissioned by Shane Allen, Channel 4 head of comedy, and is being made by Endemol UK subsidiary Zeppotron. Barney Reisz will produce, with Brooker and Annabel Jones executive producing.

    Sounds good!

    Does sound promising, though.

I was actually thinking the other day that TV is missing a modern day version of either The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits. So this should be very interesting indeed.

Knew there was a reason I couldn't find this. The title says Dark Mirror, but it's called Black Mirror.

Anyway, here's the creepy and intriguing trailer.

Dead Set was far better than it had any right to be and this does look very interesting. I hate it when they trail stuff and say "coming soon." At least give me a month if you're going to vague, you gits.

Starts 4th December according to this (sold-out) preview that makes me wish (for once) that I lived in London. Harold & Maude is ace, I would have liked the chance to see it on a big screen.

Scary Door is my favourite thing in Futurama. Even Zoidberg doesn't compare.

Looking forward to this. Brooker's zombie thing was alright wasn't it?

I suspect down to the fact that the only humour Brooker has yet mastered is sarcasm - that peculiar talent that is very difficult to express in plot and rather tiresome in dialogue if, like, everyone goes and does it - it's only likely to be darkly comic. Your humour glands will need to be at least 95% cocoa to find his stuff positively laugh out loud funny.

But then I've not seen it, nor his zombie thing, so who knows? Not me.

Yeah, I watched Dead Set again recently, it really held up well to a repeat viewing and as far as it's status in the Zombedy sub-genre goes, it sits in the top three for me.

I have a feeling Dark Mirror could go down as a genuine telly classic.
